We saw companies like Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite Creative Mode lead the charge but slowly and surely many games that achieve high-quality IP status turns their game into a platform for UGC. Today we got lots of web3 news. My top pick is EA Sports integrating Nike NFTs into their games.
Is this what composability looks like? I think at the very basic level, yeah. This will be table stakes moving forward.
I'm surprised though since EA license a lot of those titles to use the names, likeness, etc., so I wonder how much legal legwork must've gone down behind the scenes between Nike, the IP holders, and EA to make this work. Let's wait and see how the execution take shape.

What caught my eyes was this statistic from MENA. A good behind the envelope number to hold is that gaming is a $200B industry so MENA is projected to be 3% of that.
We saw a lot of investment activities from MENA region so the government is highly active in this space.
Fun fact, the population of MENA is around 1% of the world's.

Look at Gaming #228 | Tuesday June 6th 2023
Apple dropped some banger news at its annual WWDC, particularly their new "spatial computing" Apple Vision Pro. This is a $3.5k mixed-reality (XR) headset — odd price point as Apple usually won't release a product before its "accessible" not by all but by many.
The message they're sending is that this is the platform killer for all your consoles, TVs, gaming peripherals, desktops, basically anything you use at home. If you add up the cost of your home entertainment media hub and your home work station, then the Vision Pro is comparable to a high performant setup.

Good batch of news today! There's a good report on IP-based games with some key nuggets such as IP games have higher retention and mainly in Adventure, Fighting, RPG, and Shooters.
Also recall that yesterday that we mentioned MENA region projecting to be $6B, the South East Asia region is hitting $5B now with Vietnam being the hub.
News around Netflix shipping new games based on banger IP like Lego as well as their own IP like Queen's Gambit. For those interested in Netflix's content-focused strategy should study Disney and how the empire is built around content.

Obvs, y'all can see that I'm currently on a MENA tip. So when this article dissecting Savvy Games Group, I had to dive in. In recent years the Public Investment Fund bought stakes in Capcom, Nexon, Nintendo, Activision Blizzard, Take-Two, and EA. Not to mention its outright purchase of Scopely and its acquisition of a large stake in Embracer Group.
They're not done. There's still nearly $40B of capital allocated to build Saudi Arabia's pressence in the global games industry.
There's also an article about China's market being $45B in 2022. This week we saw $6B for SEA region and $6B (by 2026) for MENA. All these eastern regions sapping market share away from the west is a very clear indication of the shifting landscape.

Look at Gaming #231 | Friday June 9th 2023
Happy Friday frens! 2023 is definitely a lost year for the esports space. What's interesting though is that streaming as a whole remained fairly flat/slightly down across total views, concurrent views, and stream counts. I'm bringing this up because of Twitch's recent ad guidelines, which they rolled back in response to the streamers' outcry.
Monetization has become difficult across not just on the publishers/game studios side. Streamers at the highest level on esports team are having a slow year, while streamers on the content creation side are also slowly bleeding. I believe that this second-screen experience we call streaming is here to stay barring all of these bearish news.
It's another form of community engagement and participation. If game forums from the 2010s are still popping off then streaming definitely has staying power.
Have a wonderful weekend y'all!

Look at Gaming #232 | Monday June 12th 2023
The creator class is growing larger and larger. When one rises to the highest echelon of content creators in the gaming space and after all the merchandising and sponsorships, the logical next expansion will be to create games leveraging the creator's IP.
Obviously the next step after that is to create a publishing arm to do the same for other creators and that's what we have here with OTK's publishing label, Mad Mushroom.
We're starting Monday off hot with a ton of news over the weekend. We have Xbox giving a roadmap for whats to come. Tencent and NetEase dominating the charts in terms of revenue for public gaming companies in China. MiHoYo crushing EA, ATVI in revenue. And of course some Louis Vuitton NFTs for all you bougie hypebeasts and hypebaes.

The two largest titans in the industry are back at it again. Epic is now seeking an appeal on the Apple ruling.
The initial conflict began in 2020 when Epic attempted to bypass Apple's fees by offering direct payments in Fortnite, leading to the game's removal from the App Store.
Though the court ordered Apple to allow for alternative payment methods, the court ruled in favor of Apple on 9 out of 10 claims. Epic wants to seek a more decisive victory effectively claiming Apple is violating nationwide antitrust laws.
In other news, we have the FTC planning to block MSFT and ATVI merger, a few analysis of Xbox's new roadmap for 2024, a look at Capcom's new game showcase. That's it for today's news round up!

The stakes are indeed high in the Microsoft vs FTC saga. Microsoft has until July 18th to try and close its proposed acquisition; otherwise, it has to pay $3 billion in breakup fees to Activision Blizzard or renegotiate new terms.
