Apex Legends: Mobile was released in May this year. Let's check in on how they're doing the past 6 months. The game had two high months in May and June with a monthly rev of $7.2M and $7.1M, respectively. Since then the game has tapered off in the $3.5M range for the past two months. Similarly, we see the same pattern in the downloads with a peak at a whopping 15.8M downloads in May. Recently, the downloads tapered off in the 1.5M per month range. The lifetime revenue has been $33.5M with 32.8M downloads. The good news is that the game GM figured out how to monetize because the rev per download increased drastically from the low $0.30 in May to a high of $1.00 in Nov.

As promised, today, we're going to look at some of Apex Legends Mobile's comps: PUBG Mobile and Garena Free Fire. Since May 2022 until now, PUBG pulled in $881M and Garena did $222M, when compared to Apex's $33M. Unsurprisingly, the genre incumbents dominated Apex's numbers by multiple magnitudes. What is surprising was that Apex seemed to have eaten market share away from Garena's more than PUBG's. In percentage terms, Garena has lost more revenue as Apex entered the scene. Rev per Download (RpD) basis for PUBG and Garena is at $6.63 and $1.84 respectively. Recall that Apex is already clocking in at $1.00 RpD. Apex's monetization engine is much better than Garena's and PUBG's when compared to their 6-month post-launch period. Though, Apex did have the benefits of standing on the shoulders of giants and learning the best practices from PUBG & Garena's multi-year track records.

Today I want to take a look at ABK, which is Activision Blizzard King! With Microsoft's $69B bid and them saying the mobile division is the most attractive asset, I wanted to dive deeper. So obviously, King's Candy Crush franchise is leading in terms of lifetime rev ($5.5B) and downloads (1.1B) but Activision's CoD Mobile ($1.1B / 383M) and Blizzard's Hearthstone ($976M / 95M) & Diablo Immortal ($164M / 17.5M) aren't too shabby either. In aggregate, there's about $7.74B in lifetime rev and $2.0B YTD 2022. Not bad, but is it worth the $69B bid?

The top 5 games in the western markets for 2022 so far are WWE SuperCard, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, Magic: The Gathering, Hearthstone, and Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, with MARVEL SNAP in 7th place all totalling $106.3M — basically 66% of the western tier-1 markets.
The concentration in the top games in CCG is driven largely by IP and is definitely a winners-take-most market structure.

Hey everyone! Since the year is almost over, I wanted to do an analysis of the most downloaded game in 2022, then compare that with the top 5 in the prior years. Garena & Subway Surfers are in the top 5 all the way back until 2018. If we expanded the the list to top 10, we see a few more new titles penetrating into the "forever-franchise" tier but getting to the top versus staying at the top are two very different things. In 2015, Clash of Clans was 2nd on the list, then 8th, then 8th again then 26th, then not even the top 100 by 2019. Keep in mind that Clash of Clans still received 3.5M downloads per month on avg in 2022.

Today I decided to look at the my favorite game genres on the app store, which are RPG, Casinos, Shooters, and Card Games.
RPG and Casinos each has about 5.8k games in their genres. Shooters has about a third of that at 2.2k, while Card Games only had about 1.1k. Although, the gross revenue for each genre seems to be in-line with one another (ie RPG has 3x the revenue of shooters), the Revenue per downloads (RpD) is all over the place.
RPGs has a RpD of $12.72, while Shooters had a mere $1.15 — even Card Games had a better RpD at $2.36. Despite having the same game count as RPGs, Casino games had an RpD of $6.81. However, when you break it up into East vs. West, a completely different pattern emerges.
In the West, we have Casino games pulling in $15.8 RpD and RPGs only at $10.35. But in the East, RPGs pull down a whopping $28.01 versus $11.61 for Casino.

A deeper look into the RPG Genre with the top two sub-genres: Team battlers and Action RPG, which have about the same game count AND the same gross rev of $7.1B and $7.5B, respectively — even the Rev per Download for both subgenres are about $13.50. These are GLOBAL numbers, but once we divided them into Tier-1 Western markets, we see that the top gross revenue subgenre is Team Battlers at $1.6B then Action RPG at less than half at $700M. The RpDs are slightly different with Team battlers at $11 and ARPG at $8. Now, we take flight to our Tier-1 Eastern markets and these numbers go wild.
The top subgenres by gross rev are ARPG at $6.1B and Team battlers at $5B with RpD range between $26 and $30. This is 3x'd that of the Western markets. Simply wow. The sleeper here is actually the subgenre Open World which pulled in a $46 RpD. This is your Genshin Impact and Diablo Immortal titles. Ludicrous!
