1. India Overtakes the US in Annual Solar Capacity Addition

👉 India has overtaken the United States in annual solar capacity addition and has become the world’s second-largest solar growth market in 2025.

👉 According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, India added 37 GW of solar capacity in 2025, while the US added 34 GW.

👉 This means India added more new solar power capacity during the year than the United States, showing the sharp acceleration in India’s renewable energy expansion.

👉 India became the second-largest solar growth market in 2025 by adding 37 GW, behind only China, which remained far ahead with 315 GW of solar capacity addition. (That's Massive for China)

2. Growth Market Does Not Mean Total Capacity Leadership

👉 Students should be very clear about this distinction. India has become the second largest solar growth market, which means it ranked high in terms of new capacity added during the year.

👉 However, in terms of total installed solar capacity, the United States is still ahead of India. The article mentions that the US had 211.6 GW of cumulative installed solar capacity in 2025, while India had 135.5 GW.

👉 India's cumulative installed solar capacity 154 GW as of April 2026.

👉 So, India is growing faster in annual additions, but it has not yet overtaken the US in total installed solar capacity.

3. India’s Solar Capacity Addition Has Accelerated Sharply

👉 India’s solar capacity addition has picked up pace in recent years.

👉The article mentions that India added 9.6 GW in 2023, 25.4 GW in 2024, and 37 GW in 2025.

4. India’s Global Solar Position Has Improved

👉 India became the world’s third-largest solar power producer in 2024, surpassing Japan.

👉 This shows that India is not only adding capacity, but also improving its global position in solar power generation.

5. Link with India’s 2030 Renewable Energy Target

👉 India aims to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. The sharp rise in solar capacity addition is therefore directly connected with India’s long-term energy transition roadmap.
