What is a Switch Auction?
A switch auction is a debt management tool used by the government, through the RBI, to exchange existing government securities with new government securities.

In simple words, the government says, “We will take back some old bonds that are maturing soon and give investors new bonds that will mature later.” So, it is not fresh borrowing in the usual sense. It is more like replacing shorter-maturity debt with longer-maturity debt.

What is Happening in This New
s?
In this case, the government wants to switch ₹30,000 crore worth of government bonds. The old bonds are maturing between 2027 and 2030. Through the switch auction, these bonds will be exchanged with longer-tenor government securities maturing between 2035 and 2060.

This simply means that the government is trying to push some of its near-term repayment burden into the future.

Why Does the Government Do This?
The main purpose of a switch auction is debt maturity management. When many government bonds mature within a short period, the government has to repay a large amount at once.

This creates redemption pressure on the government. Through a switch auction, the government reduces this near-term repayment pressure by replacing shorter-maturity bonds with longer-maturity bonds.

Simple Example:
Suppose the government has to repay ₹1,000 crore in 2027. Instead of repaying this amount in 2027, the government may offer investors a new bond that matures in 2040.

So, the government’s repayment obligation shifts from 2027 to 2040. This does not remove the debt, but it spreads the repayment burden over a longer period.

What does “6.79% GS 2027” mean?
6.79% GS 2027 is the name of a Government Security. Here, 6.79% means the annual coupon rate or interest rate on the bond. For example, if the face value of the bond is ₹100, the government pays ₹6.79 as interest every year.

Final Exam Takeaway:
A switch auction is used to exchange government securities maturing in the near future with longer-tenor government securities. It helps the government reduce near-term redemption pressure, smoothen the debt maturity profile, and improve public debt management

🚨 NaBFID Raises ₹40,00,00,00,000 - Through bonds

Wait… This Is Special.

Understand why this matters?
1
What Happened?
State-owned National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) raised ₹4,000 crore through 10-year bonds at a yield of 7.74%. In simple terms, NaBFID borrowed money from investors for a period of 10 years and agreed to pay them returns at the rate of 7.74%. The borrowing was done through the bond market instead of taking loans from banks.

Why is this Unusual?
This transaction became important because most institutions in recent months were avoiding long-term borrowing due to global uncertainty and volatility in financial markets.

Because of the West Asian crisis and uncertainty regarding future interest rates, investors were behaving cautiously. As a result, many organisations preferred shorter-duration borrowings of around 2–3 years instead of issuing long-term 10-year bonds.

In such an environment, NaBFID successfully raising a large amount through 10-year bonds shows that investors still had confidence in the institution and were willing to lend money for a longer period. That is why experts considered this bond issuance significant.

Key Terms Explained

1st Term: Yield volatility

The article mentions “yield volatility,” which means frequent fluctuations in bond market interest rates. High volatility creates uncertainty and makes investors cautious about long-term lending.

2nd Term: longer end of the curve
Another important phrase used is “longer end of the curve.” This simply refers to long-term borrowing, such as 10-year bonds, compared to shorter-term borrowings of 2–3 years.

3rd Term : Greenshoe Option
A greenshoe option allows a bond issuer to raise extra money over and above the original planned amount, if investor demand is strong.

In this article, the term is important because many issuers were unable to fully use their greenshoe options. This means that even when they had the option to raise extra funds, investors were not comfortable with the pricing or cut-off yield, especially due to market uncertainty.

This makes NaBFID’s case more significant because it successfully raised ₹4,000 crore through 10-year bonds in the same cautious market environment.

Digital Economy? You’ve heard of it.
Green Economy? You’ve heard of that too.
Indian Economy? Obviously.

But what exactly is the Creative Economy?

And what is this “Orange Economy” everyone is talking about?

Let's understand
1
What is the Creative Economy?
👉 The creative economy refers to economic activities based on creativity, ideas, intellectual property, culture, innovation, and artistic talent. Instead of producing physical goods alone, these sectors generate value through knowledge, design, entertainment, originality, and digital creativity.

👉 Examples include films, music, gaming, software, influencers, digital content creation, fashion design, arts, handicrafts, patents, copyrights, and cultural products.

👉 In simple words, the creative economy earns money from “ideas and creativity” rather than only from factories or traditional production.

Why is India Focusing on It Now?
👉 India believes that creative and digital sectors are among the fastest-growing parts of the economy. According to the article, India’s global innovation ranking improved significantly from 81st position in 2015 to 38th in 2025. India also filed a large number of patents, copyrights, trademarks, and designs, showing rising innovation activity.

👉 The government now wants better statistical measurement of this sector because many creative activities are currently informal and not fully captured in GDP and economic data.

What is Meant by “Formalisation”?
👉 Formalisation means bringing economic activities into the organised and officially recognised system.

What Government Measures Were Mentioned?
👉Several recent initiatives were discussed in the article. These include updates in the National Industrial Classification to include influencers and video games, promotion of blockchain technology, creation of a Services Index and knowledge group, and the Union Budget 2026–27 proposal for an “orange economy” aimed at boosting creative industries.

👉 These steps are intended to strengthen India’s creative ecosystem and support the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

👉 The Orange Economy refers to economic activities based on creativity, culture, intellectual property, and artistic talent.
