This data story highlights a major development issue in India: access to safe drinking water.

According to the article, safe drinking water access in India stood at 76.44% in 2024, which means roughly one in four Indians "still lacks" access to safe drinking water.

Rural-Urban Gap
The rural-urban gap in access to safe drinking water has reduced over the years, but it still exists. In 2014, rural access was around 51.54%, while urban access was around 94.70%. By 2024, rural access improved to 72.63%, while urban access increased to 97.12%. This shows that rural India has made significant progress, but urban India still remains far ahead.

Rural India: 2012 vs 2023
In rural India, tube well dependence declined from 52.4% in 2012 to 47.54% in 2023. Piped water access increased from 31.25% to 38.64% during the same period. This shows a positive shift, but also tells us that rural water supply still depends heavily on groundwater sources.

Urban India: 2012 vs 2023
In urban India, piped water remained the dominant source of drinking water. It was around 69.07% in 2012 and 68.19% in 2023, showing little change. However, bottled water usage increased from 3.29% in 2012 to 14.53% in 2023, indicating rising dependence on packaged drinking water in urban areas.

Summary:
India has improved access to safe drinking water, especially in rural areas, but the challenge is not fully over. The rural-urban gap has narrowed, piped water access has improved, and bottled water use is rising. However, the fact that one in four Indians still lacks safe drinking water shows that water access remains a major governance and development challenge.

This data shows India’s position among major BRICS economies in terms of safe drinking water access. According to World Bank data, India’s access improved from 59.58% in 2014 to 76.44% in 2024. This means India has made strong progress, but still has a significant gap to cover.

China is far ahead, with safe drinking water access reaching 100% from 2020 onwards
