Shenzhen was forced into a seven-day-long lockdown in mid-March. The Futian District, heavily hit by Omicron, was subjected to stringent measures that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) claimed made possible by its so-called impeccable power of social mobilization. Here, the Chaser highlights the differences between anti-Covid strategies in both Hong Kong and mainland China to show how the CCP utilized digital technology to monitor the population.

As Huizhou, a city north of Shenzhen, erupted in protests with people yelling “Independence to the Greater Bay Area” on the verge of scuffle with police at testing stations, in Futian entire housing estates were locked down, with residents confined to their homes shouting “Set us free!”
