Yeah, my name is Fidel, a master's student studying in Russia, and I just want to wish you a Merry Christmas. And fans of [The Fareed Report], I want to wish you a Merry Christmas. And it's quite interesting celebrating New Year in Moscow. And in fact, the lighting system and the decorations and the fireworks on the eve of New Year was very exciting. 🇷🇺🇬🇭 Foreigners Sharing their Christmas & New Year Experience in Russia.

Awal Selamatu Junior is the Vice President of International Students Council at the National Research Technical University in Irkutsk, who also shares her insights with The Fareed Report on New Year’s celebrations in Irkutsk in the Siberian region of Russia.

Hello everyone, my name is Awal Selamatu Junior. I'm from Ghana but right now I study at Irkutsk National University. I'm the vice president of the International Student Council and today I'm here to talk about how I spent my new year. So in Irkutsk we celebrate new year by going to the city center to watch some fireworks. It was so exciting and was so like cold. I was so cold that i got frozen by it was not easy but it was so loving compared to Ghana. [In Ghana], they celebrate new year also but they don't actually prioritize getting to the new year compared to Irkutsk, it is very nice feeling to be here because a lot of people brought their family, we met a lot of new people, we enjoyed, we took chai [tea] and then we did a whole lot of fun activities so I was very happy and I'm very happy to be in Siberia. Thank you.

Selma is currently in her final year Bachelor program, studying Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science.

What traditional food do you eat to mark New Year’s Celebrations?

Nelson Kudzo Kumaga, an IT Support Engineer/System Administrator at Ukhta State Technical University tells The Fareed Report how Russia’s traditional salad 🥗 ’Olivier’ “is a must on the table” to mark the new year’s celebration in Russia.

Olivier Russian popular salad is a must on the table for new year like today as I'm recording, we just finish celebrating the new year entry, new year with friends so new year here though it's a bit different from like let's say how we celebrate it in Ghana you know in Ghana uh those who are christians they go to church to meet the new year, they go to church for God’s blessing ask for forgiveness for their sins for their past year and also ask for God's blessings for the new year. And So on the 1st of January, mostly, most of the African countries and in Ghana precisely, that is when family and friends, they meet and cook and celebrate the new year. But in Russia, it's on the 31st to 1st, midnight. That is when we celebrate the new year.

Nelson has taken part in several projects and conferences, including the 2024 World Youth Festival in Sochi, and also runs a telegram channel called @thenewAfrica

And from the airport sometimes I used to tell people that when you want to get the perfect and the best reception, the airport determines all, the one who receives you at the airport, we were received by then director of the program Valvara through to our hostel. Actually where we are doing this program is my hostel. So when I was told I’m coming to Dorm Kommuna, I said that I’m coming back to home. It’s like you left an old girlfriend without any issue so coming back with the old girlfriend is always with smile and joy. You know what I mean, it’s good to be here, student life on campus is perfect. In my department, it was super from the day one to the day we exited from Moscow, it has been an interesting part of the story. Our career started to [build here]. What we thought of doing masters in Ghana and outside, I believe I did not regret coming to explore the education and the opportunities [in Russia]. Discover Russian Culture Through Tradition: Puppet Show and Epiphany Celebration

Did you know that experiencing Russia’s rich history and Orthodox faith can deepen your understanding of the Russian soul?

On January 17, 2025, the Russian Club for Foreigners at the M.I. Rudomino Library hosted a charming Traditional Puppet Show, immersing foreigners in the spirit of Russian Christmas and the Epiphany holiday. This event offered a unique glimpse into Russia’s cultural roots, highlighting language, traditions, and Orthodox faith that shape Russian identity.

Russian Language teacher for Foreigners Alena Petrovna Razuvaeva tells The Fareed Report why she enjoys teaching Russian to foreigners;

“For me, teaching Russian language and culture to foreigners is a challenge and a joy, a field for creativity and a circle of communication with like-minded teachers and students”. Alena Razuvaeva tells The Fareed Report

Because language and culture are intertwined. Phrases like "Cпасибо" [Thank you] is a shortened form of the wish "Спаси Бог" to wit — "May God save", the day of the week "Воскресенье" [Sunday] is a synonym for the Christian holiday "Easter", and other phrases/words reflect deep religious traditions, and therefore, understanding these help foreigners to grasp Russia’s values and rich history.

Join the Russian Language Club for Foreigners at the M.I Rudomino Library to explore the Russian soul through engaging activities that connect language, faith, and tradition; a key to truly understanding Russia.

Bridging Continents Through Sport; a Unique Exchange at Russia’s Legendary Luzhniki Sports Complex

🟠Recently, the African Bloggers Union teamed up with the Union of Russian Bloggers for an inspiring visit to Moscow’s renowned Boxing Academy at Luzhniki Sports Complex. The team toured state-of-the-art facilities, gaining firsthand insight into world-class training environments. They engaged with coaches, trainers, sports and other working professionals, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration.

🟠Speaking with The Fareed Report, one of the trainers Lada Terentieva emphasised why she likes boxing and how boxing has helped her over the last 10years;

My name is Lada Terentieva. I am a doctor, I am a GMM doctor, I work in the clinic and I’m working in the University. I like boxing very very much. [I’ve been going to boxing training for more than 10 years probably] and it helps me to be polite in my work and to be strong. My body is amazing because I go to training [twice a week] and it is really comfortable for me because I release stress and [I’m always happy after my training session]. Lada tells The Fareed Report

🟠This promotes knowledge exchange, boosts international cooperation, and inspires young athletes and bloggers alike to see new opportunities in sports development and digital storytelling. Moreover, such initiatives strengthen sports diplomacy and cultural understanding across continents.
