On October 25, 1916, exactly 103 years ago, Gérard Anaclet Vincent Encausse died (also known by his literary pseudonym - Dr. Papus) - French occultist, Martinist, Freemason, hypnotist, one of the most active doers of the occult enlightenment of the end of XIX - the beginning of the XX century, the founder of the Martinist Order, a member of the Ordre Kabbalistique de la Rose Croix.

Gérard Anaclet Vincent Encausse was born in Spain in A Coruña (Spain). His mother was Spanish and his father was a French chemist. When Gérard Encausse was four years old, his family moved to Paris, where he received his education. Papus spent a lot of time at the Bibliothèque Nationale, studying books on Kabbalah and magical art, as well as the writings of Eliphas Levi. Gerard Ancossus took the literary pseudonym "Papus" from "Nuctemeron of Apollonius of Tyana", which was published as an appendix to Eliphas Levi's "Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie" (1855). In 1891, Papus, together with Augustin Chaboseau, founded the Martinist Order. In 1893, Papus was ordained as bishop of l'Église Gnostique de France by Jules Doinel, the founder of the Church. In 1895, after Duanel renounced the Church, he left it under the control of a synod of three former bishops, one of whom was Encausse.

In March 1895, Papus joined the Paris Ahathoor Temple of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Gerard Encausse visited Russia three times: in 1901, 1905 and 1906, helping Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra both as a doctor and in terms of questions of an occult nature. For Nicholas II, Papus, in particular, evoked the spirit of Alexander III, the father of Nicholas II, to seek advice from him. The spirit of Alexander III made a prophecy, according to which the reign of Nicholas II would end as a result of the revolution. However, Papus said that he would magically protect Nicholas II as long as he was alive. The reign of Nicholas II lasted only 141 days after the death of Papus.

Papus is the author of more than 400 articles and 25 books on occult topics. October 28, 1923, exactly 96 years ago, Theodor Reuss died - an Anglo-German occultist, freemason, journalist, singer, head of the original Ordo Templi Orientis.

Reuss was the son of the hotel owner. In his youth, he was a singer and was introduced in 1873 to Ludwig II of Bavaria. Later, Reuss became a newspaper journalist and often traveled to England, where he was initiated into Freemasonry at Pilger Loge No. 238 of United Grand Lodge of England in 1876.

In 1876, Reuss became a member of the British Social League, but was expelled on suspicion of being an agent of German intelligence.

In 1880 in Munich, he participated in an attempt to revive Adam Weishaupt's Bavarian Order of Illuminati). In England, he met William Wynn Westcott, one of the founders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and a member of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia. Westcott handed Reuss a charter for the Swedenborgian Rite in 1901, and also gave him the authority to establish the High Council of S.R.I.A. for Germany. He was a member of the Supreme Council of the Martinist Order under the direction of Papus (1891) and was a member of l’Ordre kabbalistique de la Rose-Croix (in 1897 he became its Grand Master).

Previously, Charles Barlet was one of the first members of the French branch of the Société Théosophique, but left it at the same time as Papus in 1888. Barlet was also a member of Groupe indépendant des études ésotériques (GIDEE) and a Bishop of the Gnostic Church of Jules Doinel.

October 31, 1833, 186 years ago, Kenneth Robert Henderson Mackenzie was born - an English linguist, orientalist, and autodidact.

Mackenzie was born on October 31, 1833 in Deptford, a neighborhood in south-east London. The following year, his family moved to Vienna, his father worked as an assistant surgeon in the Imperial Hospital. Mackenzie was educated in Vienna, he studied German, French, Latin, Greek and Hebrew. At 17 he returned to London and worked in publishing office of Benjamin Disraeli.

In 1854, Mackenzie met Paschal Beverly Randolph, who was appointed the Supreme Grand Master Fraternitas Rosae Crucis for the Western World. In 1861, Mackenzie went to Paris to meet Eliphas Levi (Alphonse Louis Constant). In 1864, Robert Wentworth Little discovered in the pantries of London Freemason’s Hall some old Rosicrucian rituals written in German. He turned to Mackenzie to help him create an esoteric order. Thinking that Mackenzie, a friend of Eliphas Levi and Pascal Beverly Randolph, lived in Vienna and was probably initiated into a German Rosicrucian fraternity there, Little believed that Mackenzie had the right to found a new authentic esoteric society. In 1866, Little, with the help of Mackenzie, founded the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (S.R.I.A.). The leaders of the new organization were William Wynn Westcott, William Robert Woodman and Samuel Liddle MacGregor Mathers - these three figures will later become the founders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

Mackenzie compiled the “Royal Masonic Cyclopaedia”. It is believed that this book is in many ways an abbreviated retelling of the "Encyclopaedia of Freemasonry" by Albert Mackey.

In 1881, Mackenzie edited the early editions of the “Kneph” - Masonic periodical. He also planned to write the book "The Game of the Tarot: Archeological and Symbolic Considerations". In 1882, Mackenzie created the “Order of Light”, and then, in 1883, he created the “Society of Eight”, dedicated to the study of alchemy.

Kenneth R.H. Mackenzie died July 3, 1886.

In August 1887, “Cipher Manuscripts” were purchased from Mackenzie’s wife and through A. F. A. Woodford transferred to William Wynn Westcott.
