On August 18, 1850, exactly 170 years ago, Honoré de Balzac died - a French writer, one of the founders of realism in European literature. Balzac was fond of martinism and, perhaps, was initiated by one of the followers of Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin. He was also interested in the mysticism of Emanuel Swedenborg.

Honoré de Balzac was born in Tours in the family of a peasant from Languedoc. His father’s original surname was Balssa, but he changed it to Balzac. Balzac’s father, Bernard François Balssa, became wealthy by buying and selling noble lands confiscated during the revolution, then he became an assistant mayor.

Honoré de Balzac from childhood was fond of literature, but his parents insisted that he take up a law career. Anyway, Honoré de Balzac went his own way.

Among the works of Balzac there are some filled with mystical and occult motifs, such as the novel “The Elixir of Longevity” (L'Élixir de longue vie), the novel “The Skin of Sorrow” (“La Peau de chagrin”), the novel “Seraphîta”, 1835 - reflecting Balzac’s interest in the mystical concepts of Emanuel Swedenborg and Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin.

Honoré de Balzac died on August 18, 1850. He was buried at the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris, according to the memoirs of contemporaries, “all the writers of France” came to the funeral. His coffin was carried, in particular, by Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo.

On August 26, 1795, 225 years ago, Alessandro Cagliostro (Giuseppe Balsamo) died - a mystic and adventurer who called himself by various names, in France he was known as Joseph Balsamo. His father was a cloth merchant. in childhood, he was expelled from the school at the Church of St. Rocco because of his behavior, and his mother sent him to re-education in a Benedictine monastery in the city Caltagirone. One of the monks noticed in Giuseppe Balsamo the ability to carry out chemical research and took him as his student, but he did not teach for a long time, because the student was accused of fraud after a while. Upon his return to Palermo, Giuseppe Balsamo began to engage in the manufacture of potions, which he presented as miraculous, forging documents and selling cards that were supposed to lead buyers to the treasures. Later he had to go to Messina, where his aunt with the surname Cagliostro lived. After her death, according to one of the versions, Giuseppe Balsamo took her surname and title for himself, becoming Count Cagliostro. During his stay in Rome, Cagliostro married Lorenza Feliciani, who was famous for her beauty. He traveled with her. In Paris, Cagliostro collided with Saint-Germain, his rival, also an adventurer and mystic. From Saint-Germain, Cagliostro took over the idea of ordering his servants to tell them that they had served their master for hundreds of years.

Cagliostro traveled a lot and spread fantastic rumors about himself: as if he communicated with the thousands of wise men in the Egyptian pyramids, as if he himself was born 2,236 years ago, in the year when Vesuvius erupted, and he partially perceived its power. He also offered various services: he was engaged in guessing winning lottery numbers, made gems, and sold healing elixirs (in particular, he claimed that he knew the recipe of the elixir of eternal life). Cagliostro also visited Russia, under the name of Count Phoenix. In St. Petersburg, Cagliostro had communication with Ivan Yelagin and Grigory Potemkin. The Empress Catherine the Great herself did not use the services of Cagliostro, but recommended her court to communicate with the count. However, over time, Cagliostro was recognized as a fraud in Russian Empire, the empress herself wrote the comedy “The Deceiver”, in which she showed Cagliostro as a ridiculous rogue and loser, this comedy was put on stage in St. Petersburg some time after Cagliostro fled.

After traveling to Europe in 1789, Cagliostro returned to Italy. In September 1789, Cagliostro was arrested on charges of Freemasonry. The Inquisition accused him of warlocking and fraud. Lorenza, wife of Cagliostro, testified against him. Cagliostro was sentenced to be burned, but Pope Pius VI replaced it with a life sentence. He was also sentenced to repentance in the church of Santa Maria, while his magic books and inventory were burned at the stake. Cagliostro was placed in the castle of San Leo, where he died on May 26, 1795, according to some sources - from epilepsy, according to others - from poison, poured by prison guards.

On August 28, 1749, exactly 271 years ago, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in the German trading city Frankfurt am Main - a German writer, philosopher and natural scientist, statesman, author of the famous tragedy “Faust”.

In 1765, Goethe went to study law at the University of Leipzig. There he came into contact with modern literary and artistic art, wrote his first collection of poems in the Rococo genre. However, in 1768, Goethe began to bleed due to exacerbation of tuberculosis, and he had to return to Frankfurt without having received a degree. Goethe's illness and long recovery process turned him to mystical themes and religions.

In 1782, Goethe wrote the ballad "The Forest King" (“Der Erlkönig”), the motive of which was borrowed from the Danish legend “Ellerkonge”, translated into German by Johann Gottfried Herder.

Goethe died on March 22, 1832 in Weimar. In the same year, the second part of “Faust” was published, according to Goethe’s own wish: he finished writing the second part on July 22, 1831, sealed the manuscript in an envelope with instructions to open and publish it only after his death. The second part of “Faust” is Goethe's set of thoughts on the natural sciences, politics, aesthetics and philosophy. Goethe considered this work the main work of his life.

On August 31, 1926, exactly 94 years ago, Marc Haven (Emmanuel Lalande) died. He was a member of the Supreme Council of Martinist Order, founded by Papus (he replaced Maurice Barres on his post in the Supreme Council), and also he was Papus' companion on occult research. Marc Haven was a member of the Independent Group of Esoteric Studies (G.I.E.E.E.), which was later renamed the Hermetic School, governed by the "Council of Excellence", which included Marc Haven. He was also a participant in the magnetic experiments of Philippe Nizier and a friend of Albert Poisson, an alchemist, a member of the Kabbalistic Order of the Rose + Cross. In 1900, Marc Haven collected thirty unpublished letters by Albert Poissont devoted to alchemical experiments, and published them in the journal "L'Initiation".

On September 2, 1907, exactly 113 years ago, Robert Ambelain (n.m. Sar Aurifer) was born - French Occultist, Great Hierophant of the Rite of Memphis-Misraim, Bishop of Église gnostique universelle, Martinist, author of books on occultism and mysticism, magic and astrology.

The young years of Robert Ambelain fell on the tragic event in the life of mankind - World War II. As a Mason of the Rite of Memphis-Misraim, Robert Ambelain risked his life with all possible and impossible efforts to save documents relating to the tradition of the Rite, and in general to continue the work of the Lodge, despite the persecution of the Vichy government. While in a clandestine position, he also transfered Martinist initiations. After being initiated into Martinism in 1939, he, already during the occupation, was admitted to the Order of the Elus Coens, where he obtained the degree of Reau Croix resurge.

After the war, in 1946 he was ordained Bishop of the Église gnostique universelle under the name of Tau Robert. As the founder of the Église gnostique apostolique, he became the Patriarch of the Église gnostique universelle in 1969 under the name of Tau Jean III, and a few years later became the Grand International Master of the Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis-Misraïm.

Robert Ambelain left behind more than 42 works on occultism, mysticism, initiatory tradition of the West, as well as interesting historical moments. Some of them have already been translated into Russian, in particular "Dramas and Secrets of History", "Jesus or the Deadly Secret of the Templar".
