On July 10, 1730, 293 years ago, Jean-Baptiste Willermoz was born - a French Freemason initiated into the Ordre des Chevaliers Maçons Élus Coëns de l'Univers, a pupil of Martinez de Pasqually, a participant in the Wilhelmsbad Convention, who founded the Rite Ecossais Rectifié, which contains the doctrine of the Elus Cohens in its highest degrees, and previously, the higher degrees of the Rite also contained adapted theurgic operations used by Martinez de Pascually.

Jean-Baptiste Willermoz was born on July 10, 1730 in Lyon and spent most of his life there. Willermoz was a manufacturer of silk and silver, who headed charitable organizations. He was initiated into Freemasonry at the age of 20 and became the Venerable Master of his Lodge at the age of 23.

In 1762, Willermoz became the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of regular freemasons in Lyon, he added to its system of the seven highest degrees the eighth - "The Scottish Grand Master, Knight of the Sword and Rose-Cross." In 1763, Willermoz and his brother Pierre-Jacques Willermoz (physician and chemist) founded the “Sovereign Chapter of Knights of the Black Eagle Rose-Cross”, in which alchemical studies were conducted.

In the Order of the Elected Cohens, Willermoz received a recommendation from Bacon de la Chevalerie, and the Marquis de Lusignan. He was initiated into the Order at Versailles in 1767.

In 1770, Willermoz joined the Rite of Strict Observance of von Hund, where he adopted the knightly name Eques ab Eremo. He also became the Chancellor of the Chapter in Lyon. In 1778, at the Convent des Gaules, Jean-Baptiste Willermoz advocated the reform of the Rite of Strict Observance and achieved its transformation on the basis of the Martinez de Pascually’s doctrine on reintegration. Elements of the Order of the Elus Cohens were laid in the system of the Rite Ecossais Rectifié, and all references to the Templars were removed. In 1782, the Wilhelmsbad Convention was held, where the Rite of Strict Observance ceased to exist, and the Rite Ecossais Rectifié with the highest degrees C.B.C.S. (Chevalier bienfaisant de la Cité sainte) was finally formed and approved.

Jean-Baptiste Willermoz died on May 29, 1824 in Lyon. He was buried in Lyon in the Cimetière de Loyasse.

July 14, 1882, 141 years ago, Henri Delaage died - Initiator of Dr. Gerard Encausse (Papus). He gave Papus his initiation into martinism a few weeks before his death, in the same year of 1882. Henri Vicomte Delaage himself claimed that Louis Claude de Saint-Martin initiated his maternal grandfather. Eliphas Levi in "History of Magic" calls Henri Delaage "an unrecognized wonderworker," "a productive writer," and "gifted spellcaster."

Henri Delaage wrote several essays on the occult topic: "La Science du vrai, ou les Mystères de la vie, de l'amour, de l'éternité et de la religion dévoilés", "L'Éternité dévoilée, ou Vie future des âmes après la mort", "Le monde occulte, ou Mystères du magnétisme dévoilés par le somnambulisme", "Les Ressuscités au ciel et dans l'enfer", "Doctrines des sociétés secrètes", "Action motrice du fluide magnétique".

On July 31, 1743, 280 years ago, Semyon Ivanovich Gamaleya was born - a Russian freemason and one of the active actors of Freemasonry in the times of Nikolay Ivanovich Novikov, his associate, translator (he knew Latin, Polish, German, French) and the poet. He was born in 1743 in the family of a priest, he studied at the Kiev Academy. He became one of the founders of the Typographical company in Moscow. Founded in 1782 lodge "Deucalion". He actively engaged in enlightenment activities, enjoyed great respect among Russian martinists and freemasons. In 1784, he distributed all his property to the poor, earning the reputation of “the man of God”. He refused to receive at his disposal 300 serfs, whom he could get for his service in Belarus. After the start of the persecution of the Russian Martinists, he lived in the village Avdotyino for the rest of his life.

On August 9, 1541, 482 years ago, Guy Lefèvre de la Boderie was born - a French Orientalist who studied the Bible, and was a poet.

At an early age, he began to study Middle Eastern languages, in particular Hebrew and Syriac. After traveling to different provinces of France, he began studying under the guidance of Guillaume Postel, professor in the Collège de France. Guy Lefèvre de la Boderie was the editor of “Novum Testamentum syriace, cum versione Latin”, which was included in the “Antwerp Polyglot Bible”.

Guy Lefèvre de la Boderie is also the author of mystical poetic works filled with the symbolism of Christian Kabbalah. He carried out translations, in particular, from Latin into French. Among his translations are the works of Pico della Mirandola and Marsilio Ficino.

On August 18, 1850, 173 years ago, Honoré de Balzac died - a French writer, one of the founders of realism in European literature. Balzac was fond of martinism and, perhaps, was initiated by one of the followers of Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin. He was also interested in the mysticism of Emanuel Swedenborg.

Honoré de Balzac was born in Tours in the family of a peasant from Languedoc. His father’s original surname was Balssa, but he changed it to Balzac. Balzac’s father, Bernard François Balssa, became wealthy by buying and selling noble lands confiscated during the revolution, then he became an assistant mayor.

Honoré de Balzac from childhood was fond of literature, but his parents insisted that he take up a law career. Anyway, Honoré de Balzac went his own way.

Among the works of Balzac there are some filled with mystical and occult motifs, such as the novel “The Elixir of Longevity” (L'Élixir de longue vie), the novel “The Skin of Sorrow” (“La Peau de chagrin”), the novel “Seraphîta”, 1835 - reflecting Balzac’s interest in the mystical concepts of Emanuel Swedenborg and Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin.

Honoré de Balzac died on August 18, 1850. He was buried at the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris, according to the memoirs of contemporaries, “all the writers of France” came to the funeral. His coffin was carried, in particular, by Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo.

On September 2, 1907, 116 years ago, Robert Ambelain (n.m. Sar Aurifer) was born - French Occultist, Great Hierophant of the Rite of Memphis-Misraim, Bishop of Église gnostique universelle, Martinist, author of books on occultism and mysticism, magic and astrology.

The young years of Robert Ambelain fell on the tragic event in the life of mankind - World War II. As a Mason of the Rite of Memphis-Misraim, Robert Ambelain risked his life with all possible and impossible efforts to save documents relating to the tradition of the Rite, and in general to continue the work of the Lodge, despite the persecution of the Vichy government. While in a clandestine position, he also transfered Martinist initiations. After being initiated into Martinism in 1939, he, already during the occupation, was admitted to the Order of the Elus Coens, where he obtained the degree of Reau Croix resurge.

After the war, in 1946 he was ordained Bishop of the Église gnostique universelle under the name of Tau Robert. As the founder of the Église gnostique apostolique, he became the Patriarch of the Église gnostique universelle in 1969 under the name of Tau Jean III, and a few years later became the Grand International Master of the Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis-Misraïm.

Robert Ambelain left behind more than 42 works on occultism, mysticism, initiatory tradition of the West, as well as interesting historical moments. Some of them have already been translated into Russian, in particular "Dramas and Secrets of History", "Jesus or the Deadly Secret of the Templar".

On September 19, 1901, 122 years ago, Arthur Edward Waite, an English mystic and occult historian, at the age of 43 joined Freemasonry. He was initiated in Runnymede Lodge No. 2430 in Wraysbury (Buckinghamshire, England). Obviously, Edouard Blitz, Delegate of the Supreme Council of the Martinist Order for the United States of America, with whom Waite had a lengthy correspondence, strongly encouraged him to this decision.
