On August 1, 1555, 464 years ago, Edward Kelly, the medium of the English Rosicrucian and the magician John Dee, was born. He helped the famous John Dee to receive the methods of Enochian Magic from communion with Enochian Spirits. In 1586, Edward Kelly demonstrated to King Rudolf II in Prague the experience of transforming mercury into gold using the red alchemical tincture. Rudolph II wished to have the secret of turning base metals into gold and gaining eternal life. He generously bestowed Kelly so that he would reveal a secret to him. But Kelly was in no hurry to share secrets. In 1589, John Dee left Kelly, and he continued his solitary journey, losing luck. Soon he became the initiator of the duel in which he killed the enemy, but was captured and imprisoned in the castle Křivoklát in the Czech Republic. Here Rudolph II insisted that Kelly decipher for him the contents of his papers with occult secrets, and fulfilled the promise. Kelly chose to run, when escaping he broke his leg, which eventually had to be amputated. Rudolph II tried to give him a second chance, but lost his patience, and in 1596 concluded him in Hněvín Castle. Kelly again escaped, in this time he broke his other leg. Being caught, he preferred to take poison, and thus died in the 42nd year of his life, as evidenced by the court alchemist of the Moscow Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich Arthur Dee (Artemy Ivanovich Diy).

On August 2, 1905, exactly 114 years ago, Philippe Anthelme Nizier (Maître Philippe de Lyon) died . He was a French mystic who gained a reputation as a healer among French occultists, a friend and mentor of Dr. Papus. He conducted healing sessions and claimed that he could give absolution to people, while sins are the causes of physical illness. Anyway, he did not heal his own daughter, who died at the age of 25 and watched her wither. Maître Philippe argued that such was the will of Heaven - that she died. Maître Philippe arrived in the Russian Empire in 1901 and for some time had influence on Empress Alexandra Feodorovna and Emperor Nicholas II. It was in St. Petersburg that he received a diploma of doctor of medicine for the healings that he conducted. However, in 1903 he was exposed as a charlatan and expelled from Russia.

Maître Philippe died on August 2, 1905 at the age of 56 in L'Arbrell (commune of the department of Rhône in France) and was buried in the Loyasse cemetery in Lyon.

On August 4, 1924, exactly 95 years ago, Demetrius Platon Semelas died, a Greek Martinist who became a member of the Egyptian Martinist Lodge in Cairo under the leadership of Eugene Dupre in 1911, and re-established the Order of the Rose-Croix d'Orient a little after his Initiation. Robert Ambelain builds the foundation of this Order to Alexios Komnenos, some other researchers - to Michael Psell, and Semelas argued that the Rose-Croix d'Orient was founded by the Patriarch of Constantinople Photius. From this we can conclude that this secret society during the Byzantine Empire in Constantinople included in its members representatives of both secular and spiritual power, as well as Byzantine mystics and demonologists. When the First World War began, many Martinists returned to France. Dupre was mobilized, and Semelas settled in Paris and became a close friend of Papus. Papus and Semelas were thinking over the idea of replacing the Kabbalistic Order of the Rose-Cross with the Rose-Croix d'Orient and making it an internal Order within the Order of the Martinists.

Also in 1915 Demetrius Platon Semelas together with Maria Dupre founded the Order of the Lily and the Eagle (L'Ordre du Lys et de L'Agle - O.L.A.) “for the revival of the Orphic spirit”. Semelas met Dupre family in 1909.

After studying at the University of Munich, he served from 1859 to 1872 in the Bavarian Army. Then he began to study the phenomenon of hypnotism and make general occult studies, philosophical research. In 1868, he received the degree of doctor from the University of Tübingen in recognition of his essay “Oneirokritikon. Der Traum vom Standpunkt des transcendentalen Idealismus” dedicated to the issue of the psychology of dreams.

On August 5, 1860, exactly 159 years ago, Oswald Wirth was born - a French occultist, one of the founders of the Kabbalistic Order of the Rose + Cross, a freemason, an artist.

Oswald Wirth was born on August 5, 1860 in Brienz (Switzerland). By his knowledge of the occult, he was obliged to Stanislas de Guaite, to whom he was very grateful for that. Wirth met Marquis de Guaita in 1887, and, being his friend and collaborator, worked as his secretary. Stanislas de Guaita helped Wirth to sharpen his literary style.

In 1889, Wirth created, under the guidance of de Guaita, 22 Major Arcanes for “Tarot kabbalistique”. These cards were based on the images of the Marseille Tarot, but some changes were made to them that included occult symbolism in the Major Arcana.

Oswald Wirth wrote several essays on Freemasonry (including the three-volume book “La Franc-Maçonnerie rendue intelligible à ses adeptes”), astrology, tarot, alchemy.

Oswald Wirth died on March 9, 1943. He is buried in the Mouterre-sur-Blourde cemetery in the south of Poitiers.

On August 6, 1937, exactly 82 years ago, Annie Horniman, an occultist and theater patron, died. Annie Horniman was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Annie Horniman founded the Abbey Theater in Dublin, as well as the first regional repertoire theater company in the Britain, Gaiety Theater in Manchester.

Annie Horniman was born in 1860 in Surrey Mount, Forest Hill, London. Her grandfather founded the tea business Horniman and Company, and her father was a tea merchant. Despite the fact that the father of Annie Horniman considered the theater something sinful, from the age of 14 she was passionate about the theater.

In 1890, Annie Horniman joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. There she met with William Butler Yeats, whom she supported on his career. She supported a theatrical career of Florence Farr, also a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. At first, she provided support anonymously, thanks to the grandfather’s inheritance, but in the end she discovered the talent of a theater administrator, and began to own and manage two theaters. Annie Horniman became a famous public figure in Manchester, she lectured on the theater, as well as women's suffrage. In 1910, Annie Horniman was awarded an honorary master's degree at the University of Manchester. On August 8, 1887, exactly 132 years ago, Adolphus Frederick Alexander Woodford handed over the “Cipher Manuscripts” to William Wynn Westcott, on the basis of which the magic system of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was built.

The Cipher Manuscripts consists of 60 folios and contains materials on Hermeticism, Alchemy, Kabbalah, Astrology and Tarot. The basic structure of the degrees in the manuscript is identical to the system of Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (S.R.I.A.) and the German Orden der Gold- und Rosenkreuzer.

The words in the Manuscripts were written in English, from right to left in a simple substitution cryptogram. The numbers in the Manuscripts were written in Hebrew letters. The Manuscripts also contained images of magical implements. In addition, the address of Fräulein Anna Sprengel, a German adept of the Gold und Rosenkreuzer Order, was written in the Manuscripts.

The origin of the Cipher Manuscripts is unknown; various versions are being put forward. Arthur Edward Waite in his autobiographical book “Shadows of Life and Thought” (1938) wrote that Kenneth R. H. Mackenzie, a colleague of A.F.A. Woodford and student of Frederick Hockley, could possess these Manuscripts. Woodford, in a letter to Westcott, wrote that this Manuscripts also passed through the hands of Éliphas Lévi, and on one of the pages there is a note signed “A.L.C.”

At an early age, he began to study Middle Eastern languages, in particular Hebrew and Syriac. After traveling to different provinces of France, he began studying under the guidance of Guillaume Postel, professor in the Collège de France. Guy Lefèvre de la Boderie was the editor of “Novum Testamentum syriace, cum versione Latin”, which was included in the “Antwerp Polyglot Bible”.

Guy Lefèvre de la Boderie is also the author of mystical poetic works filled with the symbolism of Christian Kabbalah. He carried out translations, in particular, from Latin into French. Among his translations are the works of Pico della Mirandola and Marsilio Ficino.
