January 17, 1382, exactly 637 years ago, the legendary French alchemist Nicolas Flamel and his wife Pernelle made a successful experiment in turning mercury into silver. In his diary, Flamel made the following entry: “At last I found that looked for, and recognized it by a caustic smell. Carrying out Making for the first time, I used mercury which about a half-pound I turned into pure silver, with higher quality, than received in mines. There was it at about noon on January 17th, on Monday, in my own house, in a year of the Lord of 1382".

January 18, 1743, exactly 276 years ago, French mystic and founder of Martinism was born, Louis Claude de Saint-Martin. The authorship of Louis Claude de Saint-Martin owns many mystical writings, which he signed under the pseudonym "Unknown Philosopher".
Louis Claude de Saint-Martin was initiated into the Ordre des Chevaliers Maçons Élus Coëns de l'Univers of Martinez de Pasqually, and he was de Pasqually's personal secretary. Saint-Martin was very deeply immersed in the practices and concepts that de Pasqually taught, and the pseudonym "The Unknown Philosopher" was chosen for the reason that this was the name of the invisible agent with whose help the Elus Cohens acquired the knowledge of the essence of things during theurgic operations. Saint-Martin was also deeply immersed in teachings set forth in the writings of Jacob Boehme, he was the first who translated his works from German into French.

On January 18, 1873, exactly 146 years ago, Edward George Earle Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton, died, the author of the famous Rosicrucian novel "Zanoni" ("Ghost"), written in 1842. In "Zanoni" the author presents a description of the action of the “Guardian of the Threshold,” protecting the esoteric truth from unprepared and unworthy students of the occult sciences. The preface to the Rosicrucian novel was published in "Serpent of the Book of Genesis" by Stanisals de Guaita. This preface states that the manuscript of this novel fell into the hands of Bulwer-Lytton in a ciphered form from the old Rosicrucian. Thus, there was a reason to believe that Bulwer-Lytton himself is a Rosicrucian. Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia declared Bulwer-Lytton its "grand patron", which Bulwer-Lytton himself could not influence in any way. For the first time, the novel “Zanoni” was translated into Russian by an unknown translator in 1879, but the translation was incomplete and imperfect. In 1994, the translator G. Parkhomenko made the literary processing and correction of the old translation, and O. Chorakaev translated the missing chapters.
It should be noted that the novels by Bulwer-Lytton enjoyed considerable popularity among his contemporaries, and his name was well-known. In the Russian Empire, Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin, inspired by the work of Bulwer-Lytton "Pelham; Or, The Adventures of a Gentleman" (1828), was going to write the novel "Russian Pelham" based on its motives.
Another work by Bulwer-Lytton concerns occult matters - "The Coming Race" (1871). It describes the concept of "Vril" - magical power, the owner of which becomes the master of his destiny and the whole world. In the future, this fantastic concept, alas, was adopted by the Nazis who felt interest in it.

January 19, 1868, exactly 151 years ago, Gustav Meyrink was born (his real name is Gustav Meyer) - a famous Austrian expressionist writer who wrote literary works on mystical themes. He was a member of the Martinist Lodge “Der Blauen Stern”, and, moreover, he was a member of the Order of the Golden Dawn. He is known especially for his mystical stories “The Golem” and “The Angel of the West Window”. Despite the fact that, from the point of view of practical occultism, his stories cannot be called accurate, yet they have very interesting mystical ideas worthy of reflection on them. In addition to writing stories, Meyrink earned his living as a banker and translator.
