Explained in 10 Points - Why the Red Fort Became the Venue for the PM's Independence Day Speech?

🏛️ Every August 15th, the Prime Minister of India addresses the nation from Delhi's historic Red Fort.

🎤 Jawaharlal Nehru began this tradition in 1947, addressing the nation on August 16th and declaring himself the "pratham sevak" of India.

📜 The Red Fort's significance is rooted in history: under the Delhi Sultanate, Delhi became the major capital city for north India.

🤴 Babur, the founder of the Mughal dynasty, termed Delhi the 'capital of all Hindustan'. Mughals, particularly under Shah Jahan, reinforced its status, making it the seat of power and the location of the Red Fort.

🍂 Despite the decline of Mughal power, the symbolic significance of the emperor remained strong, as evidenced by the Rebellion of 1857, where rebels rallied around the aged Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar.

The British, post their takeover, stripped the Red Fort of its Mughal grandeur, destroying or repurposing around 80% of its structures.

🎉 However, the British too acknowledged Delhi's symbolic power, hosting grand ceremonies like the Delhi Durbars and ultimately moving the capital from Calcutta to Delhi in 1911.

🔱 The British view was captured in a saying: "he who rules Delhi rules India".

🌟 In the lead-up to independence, the Red Fort regained prominence as a symbol of resistance, especially following the trials of the Indian National Army (INA) leaders there, which ignited nationalist sentiments.

Jawaharlal Nehru's decision to hoist the flag at the Red Fort in 1947 emphasized the symbolic reclamation of the fort and India from British colonial power. This reclamation is celebrated yearly on Independence Day.

Explained in 10 Points - The Dark Truth of World’s Happiest Countries

🌟The World Happiness Report, backed by the United Nations, ranks countries on perceived happiness using Gallup surveys where participants rate their contentment with life.

🌟The top five countries in terms of happiness as of the report are Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Israel, and the Netherlands, while Palestinians rank 99th.

🌟Critics argue that the report favors wealthy Western nations, potentially overlooking historical colonial exploitation that contributed to their affluence.

🌟Many of the happiest countries, such as Finland, also have high rates of antidepressant use.

🌟India ranks low in the World Happiness Report but scores higher in polls considering factors like work-life balance.

🌟The happiness rankings correlate with GDP per capita but don't account for income inequality. The U.S, ranked 15th, exhibits extensive income inequality.

🌟The survey does not include data from populations in institutions or unsafe areas, potentially excluding significant portions of society.

🌟Cultural bias is a common criticism of the report. Different cultures may have varying definitions and benchmarks for "happiness."

🌟Historical and colonial exploitation contributes to the prosperity of some top-ranking countries, while nations affected by this exploitation rank lower.

🌟The World Happiness Report's actual meaning and value are debated: is it a genuine measure of satisfaction, an economic indicator, or a reflection of past exploitations?
