An access token is used to access protected resources in an application. It allows users to interact with services without logging in repeatedly. Access tokens are usually short-lived (often a few hours) and are commonly formatted as JWT (JSON Web Tokens).
A refresh token is used to request a new access token when the old one expires. This keeps the user logged in without needing to enter their password again.
Typically, when a user logs into an app, an authorization server issues an access token (and sometimes a refresh token). When the access token expires, the browser sends the refresh token to the server. If the refresh token is still valid, the server generates a new access token.
In simple terms:
Access Token: proves you are authorized to access resources.
Refresh Token: renews that authorization without requiring another login. 🔑
