Of all the naps, the "11AM on a working day" nap is possibly the most challenging, unpredictable and dangerous of them all.

A small, yet impressive, example of lateral strategic thinking applied to personal political practice came from a story that was shared with me a few days ago.

The grandmother of the storyteller was a fervent feminist and community organizer in the 40s and 50s in Florida. She was married to a man who wasn't really sympathetic with the cause and imposed domestic standards and expectations in line to that time and place.

To liberate personal time to spend into political activities and organizing, she didn't chase a frontal conflict with the husband that probably would have led to unfruitful results given the power imbalance at home. She instead adopted an array of tricks to pretend to meet the expected standards without actually doing the work.

The most memorable of them all was to put bake a single onion in the oven over the afternoon. The smell filled the domestic walls, convincing the husband she had been cooking for the whole day rather than spending her time working on the backlog of her political organizing. He was then often served precooked industrial quick meals, which took only a few minutes to heat up. He never figured out the ruse.

You can say that, sometimes, there's solidarity in an onion.
