Time is a fundamental component of political organizing. Despite popular belief, political changes are never sudden. While spurs of mobilization might appear like explosive, exponential phenomena, they always either imply a slow and incremental process of political shift that leads up to them. Otherwise, as it is more common in recent days, the same precipitous growth is just an emotional reaction from the public that doesn't determine any substantial change. A flash that vanishes as soon as the emotions are released.

Time and repetition are necessary to rearrange relations, create habits, alter life paths and ultimately shift the social structure that funnel energy and commitment towards political action rather than towards eating chips on the couch watching skibidi toilet brainrot content. Would you imagine yourself giving up your career to commit to political action overnight? Would you take the risk of doing direct action against an oil pipeline just from reading a news article? Would you trust a network of strangers with your safety in a country that repress political dissent?

Change takes time and we should learn to be comfortable with this fact, even when confronted with very urgent political issues. The moral gravity of the problem doesn't speed up the process.

Centering the importance of time tells us something: the best moment to start is now. Organizing is a marathon, not a sprint. It won't take over your life in a week, so you don't have to be afraid of starting. Yet, it it important to start now so that you can slowly and organically shape your life around it, find the friends you need, build the knowledge that will help you, and learn important lessons when you still have a chance to fail with little consequence.

Facilitating for neurodiversity - Thinking archetypes

More often than not, structured activities to brainstorm, exchange information, take decisions, or reflect on past activities are predicated on a specific single idea of how the brain works. We all known that there's no such thing, but we are intuitively inclined to build systems and practices that work for us, often filtering out from our organization people whose brain operate differently.

To think through the implications of a specific practice, here's a framework composed of four animal archetypes exemplifying four different modes of thinking, perceiving and processing the world. While we usually engage the world in more than one mode, most people have a mode that dominates all the others for most of their activities.

😺 Cat - Soloist - Internal Monologue.
Cats can work easily alone and prefer to separate from groups when working on things.
Like: Journaling, Document Production and Review, Research

🐶 Dog - Gregarious - Internal Dialogue
Dogs communicate with others by default, even when they are alone. They prefer diverging and converging conversations over linear reasoning.
Like: Group Discussion, Role Playing, Social Games (i.e. for decision-making)

🦅 Eagle - Visual - Weak, dissonant, or no internal voice
Eagles need visual support to think about things. They process images better than words.
Like: diagrams, visual examples, whiteboards

🦡 Racoon - Manual - Weak, dissonant, or no internal voice
Racoons prefer hands-on, physical activities. They prefer to experience an activity to form an opinion about it.
Like: test runs, experiments, group work.

Use these archetypes to reflect on how you approach activities and how your mode influence certain design choices. Observe the group you're part of or ask what animal people relate the most to. Then think about how different animals might participate in different ways to different activities, and if there are some that are strongly exclusionary to a certain mode of thinking.
