Time is a fundamental component of political organizing. Despite popular belief, political changes are never sudden. While spurs of mobilization might appear like explosive, exponential phenomena, they always either imply a slow and incremental process of political shift that leads up to them. Otherwise, as it is more common in recent days, the same precipitous growth is just an emotional reaction from the public that doesn't determine any substantial change. A flash that vanishes as soon as the emotions are released.
Time and repetition are necessary to rearrange relations, create habits, alter life paths and ultimately shift the social structure that funnel energy and commitment towards political action rather than towards eating chips on the couch watching skibidi toilet brainrot content. Would you imagine yourself giving up your career to commit to political action overnight? Would you take the risk of doing direct action against an oil pipeline just from reading a news article? Would you trust a network of strangers with your safety in a country that repress political dissent?
Change takes time and we should learn to be comfortable with this fact, even when confronted with very urgent political issues. The moral gravity of the problem doesn't speed up the process.
Centering the importance of time tells us something: the best moment to start is now. Organizing is a marathon, not a sprint. It won't take over your life in a week, so you don't have to be afraid of starting. Yet, it it important to start now so that you can slowly and organically shape your life around it, find the friends you need, build the knowledge that will help you, and learn important lessons when you still have a chance to fail with little consequence.
