Train the trainers

Any organization, of any kind, that aims to be effective and sustainable on the long run must have a clear path to train their members. Organizational theory in the last few decades has been increasingly moving the learning process towards the core of organizational models, because it's the best tool to address complexity and achieve decentralization.

What does it mean in practice? It means that a conspicuous part of the resources of the organization are spent expanding the skills of its members, so that they don't need to depend on other parts of the organization to do their tasks. Give an organizers a fish and they will eat for one day and bla bla bla.

Now, when you enter a political organization, even a small one, ask how learning is thought about and acted upon. Do they have a standardized base training? Do they do onboardings? How often? Are there resource lists to study independently? Are processes documented? What practices do they transfer with direct practice? Do they do shadowing? Do they have a 1-on-1 coaching system to pair newcomers to veterans?

The true marker of an organization, a movement or a political ecosystem that can have a chance at having impact on scaling is not just having a good training program, but to "train the trainers". When an organization is concerned with making its knowledge diffused and reproducible at an increasingly broader scale, you understand you're in the right place. Just training people is not enough, because the existing trainers will eventually become the bottleneck.

On the other side, when you're participating in some political training, workshop, or lecture, always think: would I be able to teach this on my own? What would I need? What am I missing? What would I do differently? Would the teacher be open to me reaching out for support?

Domani si sciopera di nuovo.

Chi? Tutti e tutte.

Quello di domani è uno sciopero generale e politico, quindi a parte i servizi essenziali tipo i medici, i pompieri e poco altro, non avete nessun modo di razionalizzare il fatto di andare al lavoro.

Non regge che state nel corporate, nelle startup, in una coop xenofemminista, che state in un ufficio, che siete freelance, che sono 12 anni che rubate lo stipendio perché si sono dimenticati di assegnarvi un manager, che avete le deadline, che avete dodici ticket assegnati su JIRA, che avete il cagotto.

Se vi trovate scuse, poi la sera dovrete guardarvi allo specchio prima di andare e dormire e ci vedrete un crumiro.

Avete il cagotto? Cagate davanti al cordone di polizia come fanno tutti.

La partecipazione alle manifestazioni di questi giorni non devono essere confuse come un segno di politicizzazione.

Sono la reazione a mesi e mesi di frustrazione e impotenza davanti ad immagini di massacri. Nessuna forza politica finora ha dato spazio ad una qualsiasi azione rilevante e questo sfogo è il risultato.

Passata l'ondata emotiva, che non durerà per sempre, la maggior parte di chi si è unito alle proteste tornerà nella passività in cui stava prima. Finito il carnevale, torna l'ordine.

Quindi che fare? Se siete tra quelli che rischiano di tornare nella passività, sfruttate l'occasione e l'energia di questi giorni per farvi coinvolgere in qualcosa a lungo termine. Se vi danno un volantino che vi invita ad un evento, andateci. Segnatevi i nomi delle organizzazioni che incrociate, soprattutto se siete in città piccole, e guardate cosa fanno.

Se invece siete in una struttura organizzativa, cogliete il momento per fare reclutamento, consapevoli che questo non è il vostro solito pubblico e dovete coinvolgerlo in maniera diversa.

La marea passerà, è inevitabile. Quello che conta sono le persone che riuscite ad intercettare nel frattempo. Persone che altrimenti torneranno sul divano.
