Despite obvious handicaps, Apple’s M1-based MacBooks delivered a laudable performance in a head-to-head against the latest performance workhorses from AMD. Puget pitted two of their AMD PCs equipped with Ryzen 5800X and Ryzen 5950X against the MacBook Air and Pro, and were themselves impressed by the Apple M1’s performance given the obvious impediments of the new architecture that prevent it from unleashing their true potential.
South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) has slapped Facebook with a 6.7 billion won (around US$6.1 million) fine for sharing user information without consent. Further, it said Facebook could have shared that information with up to 10,000 other companies.
Internet platforms relying on gig workers are getting flak not just for low pay, but also for not providing health insurance and vacation or sick time. In the SEC’s announcement, the agency wrote: “The proposed rules reflect the significant evolution that has taken place in the composition and participation of the workforce since the Commission last substantively amended Rule 701 or Form S-8, particularly the development of the so-called "gig economy," which has resulted in new work relationships.”
DoorDash has agreed to pay $2.5 million to resolve allegations that it used customers’ tips to subsidize delivery drivers’ base pay in Washington, DC. If you’ll recall, the attorney general for the District of Columbia sued the company last year, accusing it of misleading “DC consumers and used tips left for workers to boost the company’s bottom line.”
Remember that deadline the Trump Administration imposed for TikTok to either sell or face being shut down in the US? Bloomberg and Reuters report that TikTok mentioned a new date in recent court filings, saying a seven day extension has given it until December 4th.
Disney plans to lay off around 32,000 employees, mainly in its theme parks business, the company has announced in a 10-K filing. Despite the challenges to its in-person businesses, the company’s earnings have been helped by the launch of its Disney Plus streaming service, which had 73.7 million subscribers as of early October.
Apple has asked Foxconn to move some iPad and MacBook manufacturing capacity to Vietnam, Reuters reports. The Taiwanese company is said to be moving more than 30 percent of its production lines outside China.
