Cursor has launched Origin, a new code-hosting platform designed to compete with GitHub amid growing developer frustration over GitHub’s outages and declining performance. Origin offers core GitHub features, including repositories, collaborative coding, browsing and editing, and pull requests. Cursor plans to add “agent-native” capabilities and build a broader app ecosystem around the platform.

Developers do not have to abandon GitHub: Origin supports interoperability, allowing repositories to be synced and used across both services. The timing is notable because GitHub experienced a worldwide outage lasting more than six hours on Origin’s launch day, with reported error rates approaching 20%. Despite this opportunity, Cursor faces a formidable challenge: GitHub reportedly has around 180 million developers and remains the world’s largest code-hosting platform.
