SPOT THE DIFFERENCE Powered by Motorola

It took Motorola just 6 months to relaunch the same smartphone (G34) with the same SoC at the same price as G45. Even the dimensions of both the smartphones are same 😭

Funfact: Since G34 is powered by Snapdragon 695, the upcoming Moto G35 will be powered by UNISOC T760 SoC which is surprisingly more powerful than SD 695

TL;DR: Krutrim Cloud: Free for Developers, but What Actually Works?

Krutrim Cloud has provided free credits, ₹10000, till Diwali. Only Language Translation/Interpretation and a few models actually work. Their "krutrim/Krutrim-spectre-v2" model is essentially GPT-3, which also gives incorrect information and hallucinates as well. Their Language translation service, however, works fine, which has only a few languages and uses their own "Krutrim-Translate" model.

Finally, their Compute service for virtual machines through VMs has been nothing but a mess. They give ₹10,000 in free credits, but the VMs are just stuck at "In Progress". (Confirmed with @TejasXD and @Raveen2k3). Now (at the time of writing this post), no VMs except Bare Metal GPU VMs are available to create. (Confirmed with @ardwivedi16)

To summarise, Krutrim's own model feels more like a rebranded GPT-3 than an AI made in India. Their Compute service is already wrong on so many levels making it hard to ascertain what value they offer.

No hate intended. This is my own experience and I apologise if I posted some incorrect information.

Poco's Desperate Attempt to Bury the Truth: A Shameful Cover-up of a Fatal Smartphone Explosion

Recently, a guy in Tamil Nadu, India died while riding on bike as the Poco M4 smartphone exploded inside his pocket. This was such a disturbing incident that many people shared about it on twitter. However, instead of helping his loved ones in some way or atleast showing sympathy , the Poco team is asking tipsters to remove the news about this horrible incident and bury the truth since this will impact their upcoming launches and sale. Even after tipsters denied their request, they still keeps on asking the same.

Apart from Poco X3 Pro, the Poco F3 GT also suffered from motherboard failure issues and Poco Team is simply ignoring the tipster request to help their own users & is even keeping user's dead F3 GT for more than 21 days even for repairs

Microsoft finally officially confirms it's killing Windows Control Panel sometime soon

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Control Panel will be deprecated soon and replaced by the modern Settings app, which is seen to mark the end of an era for the feature first introduced in 1985 with Windows 1.0. Despite rumors about its replacement which started circulating in 2011, it has persisted because of compatibility reasons. The company is now slowly moving all system settings into the more streamlined and user-friendly Settings app.

Along with that, Microsoft has detailed other in-built Windows configuration tools such as Task Manager, Registry Editor, Local Group Policy Editor, etc. which are important to power users.

OneUI 7 will be really really smooth

As per famous tipster Ice Universe, Samsung OneUI 7 will be really really smooth and will have improved animation with reduced shutter. You can see in the videos above where the upcoming OneUI performs as smooth as iOS 18 and when comparing to current OneUI 6.1.1, the stutters in the animation are no longer there

The drawback of iOS18 animations is that when the second app keeps stopping and opening, the unfinished animation of the first app goes right back to its original position and but the OneUI 7 behaves more naturally.
Samsung will ship OneUI 7 first beta based on Android 15 in September

Samsung Teases Innovative Stretchable Smartphone Display

Samsung has developed a micro LED display that can stretch like rubber. Samsung's stretchable display is based on micro LED technology and has a 25% elongation characteristic. In other words, this incredible micro LED display can be stretched up to 1.25 times or twisted like a rubber, and it will return to its original shape

As seen in the video above, Samsung demonstrated this technology by transforming the stretchable display (roughly) into the shape of Jeju Island, where IMID 2024 (International Meeting on Information Display) takes place.

Samsung says it has the highest resolution compared to all other stretchable screens & this micro LED panel has a pixel density of 120 PPI (pixels per inch).

These advanced display technologies could have applications in niche fields, for example in the field of medicine, Samsung research team demonstrated stretchable OLED display on a heart rate monitor

Samsung Display Developing OLED Without Polarizer

At the IMID 2024 (International Meeting on Information Display), Samsung Display announced that it is developing OLED display for smartphones without polarizer film that will usher in the era of frugal panels whose power consumption is less than half of current phone screens' battery draw. A display with 50% smaller power draw will thus result in a significant boost in battery life.

The Samsung Display department VP, said that "Low power consumption that does not require charging for at least a day, vivid image quality that cannot be distinguished from reality, and large-screen yet portable design are essential conditions for AI-era displays."

Google rolls out 16 KB page size supported kernel for Pixel 8 series with Android 15 QPR1 Beta 1

Till now, Android has been “built and optimized to run with a 4 KB page size.” But by adding support for a 16 KB page size resulted in “overall performance boost of 5-10%,” though at the expense of ~9% additional memory usage including:

• 3.16% Lower app launch times while the system is under memory pressure
30% more significant improvements for some apps
Reduced power draw during app launch by 4.56%
Faster camera launch with 4.48% faster hot starts & 6.60% faster cold starts
• Improved system boot time by 1.5%

With Android 15, Google has refactored the OS “from the ground up to support running at different page sizes, thus making it page-size agnostic.” Developers have to recompile their apps for 16 KB page size devices, but the “same application binary can run on both 4 KB and 16 KB devices.”

The 16 KB page size supported kernel is already available in Android 15 QPR1 Beta 1 for the Pixel 8 series. However, this requires an unlocked bootloader AND wiping your entire userdata partition unless it's already formatted in EXT4. That's because, EXT4 block size must be <= of the system page size, while with F2FS, it must be equal. F2FS must have a matching block size and disk block size, and otherwise would require you to wipe each time you toggle the settings, unfeasible for development.

Telegram CEO and Founder, Pavel Durov Arrested by French Authorities
Reuters

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov is reportedly in custody after being arrested near Paris Saturday evening as he was departing his private jet.

French authorities believe that the platform’s lack of moderation has “allowed criminal activity to go on undeterred on the messaging app.” Durov will go before a judge tonight and could be indicted as early as today, Sunday.

Durov founded Telegram with his brother in 2013. He left Russia in 2014 after refusing to comply with Russian government demands to shut down opposition communities on his VKontakte social media platform, which he sold. "I would rather be free than to take orders from anyone," Durov told U.S. journalist in April about his exit from Russia.

Russia began blocking Telegram in 2018 after the app refused to comply with a court order to grant state security services access to its users' encrypted messages.

Happy 33rd Birthday, Linux! 🎉

Today is August 25th, which means that Linux turns 33 years old! 💃

On August 25th, 1991, Linus Benedict Torvalds, then a 21-year-old Finnish student, made an announcement on the comp.os.minix newsgroup. He mentioned that he was working on a free operating system for 386(486) AT clones—just as a "hobby," which turned into something huge, used by millions of computer users around the globe.

Hello everybody out there using minix –
I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I’d like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things).
I’ve currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that I’ll get something practical within a few months, and I’d like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won’t promise I’ll implement them
Linus
PS. Yes – it’s free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT portable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that’s all I have
:-(.
