EU rejects Apple’s European App Store changes, could face fines up to 10% of global turnover

European Union has announced that non-compliance investigations have been opened against Apple, Google, and Meta, under the new Digital Markets Act (DMA).

If that investigation confirms that Apple failed to comply with the antitrust law, then Apple could be fined up to 10% of its worldwide turnover – increasing to 20% for repeat infringements

The investigation into Apple will look at whether the company allows developers to "steer" users away from its App Store, as well as its default web browser choice screen.

Google's rules on steering in Google Play and self-preferencing in Google searches are also being looked at, as is Meta's "pay or consent model."

EU is also gathering facts & information to clarify whether Apple's new fee structure and other T&Cs for alternative app stores & distribution of apps from the web (sideloading) may be defeating the purpose of its obligations under the DMA.

A Coalition including Qualcomm, Intel, and Google is developing an alternative to Nvidia's CUDA

NVIDIA earned its $2.2 Trillion market cap by producing AI chips that power Generative AI features of companies like Microsoft, OpenAI, Google, etc.

Nvidia’s CUDA software platform, with nearly 20 years' worth of code, “helps make competition with the company nearly impossible” as over 4 million developers globally rely on CUDA to build AI and other apps.

A software developed by Intel called OneAPI, the UXL Foundation (a consortium of tech companies) are developing an alternative to NVIDIA's Cuda Platform by year-end by building a suite of software & tools that will be able to power multiple types of AI accelerator chips

The open-source project aims to make computer code run on any machine, regardless of what chip and hardware powers it.

Companies like Microsoft and AMD have worked on replacing Cuda together for a while along with OpenAI

Canva acquires Affinity to fill the Adobe-sized holes in its design suite

Web-based design platform Canva has acquired the Affinity creative software suite, positioning itself as a challenger to Adobe’s grip over the digital design industry. Canva announced the deal on Tuesday, which gives the company ownership over Affinity Designer, Photo, and Publisher.

While announcing the deal, Canva said:

While our last decade at Canva has focused heavily on the 99 percent of knowledge workers without design training, truly empowering the world to design includes empowering professional designers too. By joining forces with Affinity, we’re excited to unlock the full spectrum of designers at every level and stage of the design journey.

Affinity applications will remain separate from Canva’s platform, but that some small integrations should be expected over time.

Apple Teases WWDC 2024 Event

Apple announced that its 35th annual Worldwide Developers Conference is set to take place from Monday, June 10 to Friday, June 14.

WWDC 2024 will be an online event that is open to all developers at no cost and also host the in-person event this year.

Apple will show-off iOS 18, iPadOS 18, tvOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2.

Apart from AI, the biggest change coming to iOS 18 is, Apple users will now be able to place apps anywhere on their homescreen and will offer more customization as well
iOS 18 will also bring RCS support in iMessage

There will be NO Apple GPT Chatbot with iOS 18.
However, Generative AI features will come to other apps like Apple Music, Shortcuts, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote
