If access is blocked, teens will generally find a way around it, especially using VPNs. That can lead them down even riskier pathways like illegal content, unmoderated platforms and corners of the internet with little to no oversight.

Investigators were able to track down the suspects after Thomson's hacker handle, "DeadCatx3," was accidentally reused on personal accounts. Before their arrest, the duo had injected malware into trusted open-source developer tools and stolen 300 gigabytes of data and 500,000 credential.

TeamPCP also has practiced something akin to cyclical recruitment. In May, the source code for the third iteration of Shai-Hulud was published online, and TeamPCP soon after launched a contest offering $1,000 in virtual currency to whichever participant could conduct the largest supply chain operation using the wormโs code. According to the contest rules, participants were scored based on the number of weekly and monthly downloads of packages they compromised directly incentivizing them to target the most popular code libraries.
