China is banning fully retractable door handles starting January 1, 2027.

new models must have exterior door handles with mechanical redundancy and sufficient operating space.

This change addresses safety concerns in emergencies, such as crashes or power failures, where electronic handles may prevent doors from opening.

Semi-retractable or traditional handles with mechanical backups will remain permitted.

Under the proposed rules, vehicles weighing less than 3.5 tons must be equipped with interior and exterior door handles that include a mechanical emergency opening function.
