RBI has announced major changes to Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) accounts, and all new rules will be applicable from 1 April 2026.
Here’s how the new rules compare with earlier rules — all in one section for easy understanding:

🔄 New Rules vs Earlier Rules:
Cash Deposits
- Earlier: Banks could charge fees after a certain number of deposits.
- From 1 April 2026: No cash-deposit charges for BSBD accounts.

UPI Transactions
- Earlier: No official RBI cap, but many banks applied internal limits.
- From 1 April 2026: Unlimited UPI transactions allowed.

Account Opening Eligibility
- Earlier: Banks could deny accounts based on income/profile.
- From 1 April 2026: Banks cannot refuse BSBD accounts based on income, background, or profile.

Banking Services
- Earlier: Services were restricted — limited withdrawals, limited features, etc.
- From 1 April 2026: Full banking services must be provided.

Number of BSBD Accounts Allowed
- Earlier: One account per person, but enforcement was inconsistent.
- From 1 April 2026: Strict rule — only one BSBD account per person across all banks.

BSBD + Regular Savings Account Together
- Earlier: Some banks allowed both.
- From 1 April 2026: Not allowed — you must choose either BSBD or regular savings.
