The pictures illustrate a town in the Atlantic Ocean, the position of a nearby volcano, and the condition of the town after the volcanic eruption in 1706.


Overall, it is clear that before the eruption, the town was a thriving and well-connected place. However, following the volcanic eruption, the port and a considerable part of the town were covered by lava, while the castle remained unaffected.


Before the volcanic eruption, there was a castle in the northern part of the town, with a port capable of accommodating 60 ships per month to its east. The town square was located to the west of the castle and consisted of a number of houses. In addition, two ships were sailing across the Atlantic Ocean in opposite directions, with one heading towards Europe and the other towards America.


Regarding the position of the volcano, it was situated approximately 8 kilometres north of the town. On 8 May 1706, the first flow of lava reached the town and covered a large part of the town square. Eight days later, on 16 May, a second flow of lava spread towards the eastern side of the town and buried the port. As a result, maritime transport came to a halt, and no ships remained in the harbour. Nevertheless, the castle survived the eruption without any visible damage.
