In many parts of the world, people are living longer than they used to. Some believe this can cause problems, while others think that an aging population can bring advantages for businesses, governments and society as a whole.

Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

The fact that there are more older people living in numerous countries is a controversial topic, with some claiming it is a negative trend and others praising its benefits in general. In this essay I will discuss why this leads to the wastage of taxpayer money, but how an aging population can influence retail and service industries, the field of medicine as well as the younger generation positively.

One the one hand, this development may be responsible for the misue of government funds according to some.In other words, most nations famously pay pensions to their retired citizens and even cover their expenses if they cannot do it by themselves. This is surely a noble gesture at the fist glance, whereas if the proportion of the elderly who are incapable of any contribution whatsoever, continues to rise, this may bring about some financial challenges. Instead, rather than, investing in certain demographic that will not offer anyhing in return, it could  be a more effecient way of allocating funds for the education and wellbeing of much younger, healthier and useful young people.

On the other hand, many others have claimed that the advantages of  having more senior citizens should not be overlooked. It is common knowledge that their existence is indeed a ray of hope for those who do not want to die at a young age, as this trend not only promises a prosperous future, but also presents many perks today, as well. Firstly, the more old people we  have, the more consumers there will in shops, restaurants, hotels and more sick ones in hospitals, who, by spending money in those places, will contribute to the businesses. Secondly, having an  unusually older generation gives scientists a chance to look into their genes and make improvements in medicine. Lastly, their presence helps preserve customes, traditions and national indentities for many years to come.

It is said people are living longer compared to the past. Although some look at  this negatively, some others are optimistic about it. In this essay, I discussed both sides of the argument in-depth. In my opinion, it is true that this may seem like a burden on our shoulders, but it does not mean we need to even consider giving up on them not just because they offer some benefits to our communities, but simply because they are a part of our society.

This topic was given in the real test on May 8th.
