Prison libraries have chess books and the game has a significant following among prisoners. This means a prisoner can retreat to his cell with board and book and be absorbed in solitary, mental engagement with this subject.

You don't have to go full woo-woo to become proof against punishment isolation. You just need some sort of mental bunker.
