Alex Thomson explains how the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) would impact outlets like UK Column.

“They will be able to ask how are you complying with censorship, particularly what is your code of conduct for things which are ‘nasty’ and ‘naughty,’ which we don’t like... If anyone were the equivalent of UK Column in the EU, if this goes through as envisaged… it would mean that anyone who calls themselves or is designated a ‘media service provider,’ that would be UK Column or a mainstream outlet, would be obliged before uploading to a very large platform… to certify that we are editorially independent and that we had a certain self-censorship scheme in place, otherwise we wouldn’t get to upload.”

A subscriber to UK Column submitted a question about my recent article for CHD Europe on the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA), which was covered by Alex Thomson last week.

In summary, based off of my research, the EMFA as it stands right now does not seek to issue penalties against a member of the public for sharing so-called “disinformation” or so-called “problematic” content. The EMFA targets the media sector specifically.

One goal of the EMFA is to prevent you from having access to this so-called “dangerous” information in the first place.

It was a great pleasure to meet Tucker Carlson tonight in Budapest. He was very kind and humble (despite it being a very brief talk.)

I told him that I was really concerned about the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) and he said it doesn't sound good and took an interest in it.

In the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) proposal, very large online platforms (VLOPs) and media services providers (MSPs) will be required to enter into a contractual agreement in which the MSP must declare it complies with the EMFA Regulation before it can even publish content.

Frequent violators, whose content is “a grave and serious risk to the public security,” can expect the contractual agreement to be terminated and therefore, will no longer have publishing ability.
