Received a response from Rucknium - an anonymous statistician of Monero Research Lab who’s conducted some of the first professional statistical analyses of the Monero blockchain and contributed work through Monero’s CCS (community crowdfunding system), including current work on improving Monero’s Decoy Selection algorithm.

⚡️Japanese Authorities Trace Cybercriminals Using Monero, But How?

Another interesting development in the 'tracing' of private cryptocurrencies.

Japanese National Police announced the arrests of a 18 person cyber-criminal ring.

Interestingly they have their own word for these types of groups "Tokuryu" or "anonymous and fluid criminal groups".

Between June 2009 and January 2010, Kobayashi's group is suspected of repeatedly making approximately 900 fraudulent transactions by misusing a credit card in another person's name. It is highly likely that the abused credit card information was stolen through "phishing" via fake websites and fake e-mails.

As covered in our previous investigation into the tracing capabilities of Monero investigators, we can speculate the following:

- This is a historical investigation dating back all the way to 2009.

- The transactions in question occurred before 2020, meaning that there was no IP address anonymization (which occurred with the 2020 Dandelion++ update)

- There is mention of social networking sites and confidential communication apps, meaning that there was additional evidence gathered through these avenues.

- If the suspect (Yuta Kobayashi) neglected to protect their IP address (no VPN, or Tor) in these old transactions there would be a direct link to him.

- If the Japanese police got a dump of Monero transaction information from an exchange this group used, this would be a valuable 'consolidation transaction' which could then be used to analyze co-spends and make predictions as to where the Monero was going.

I speculate that the Japanese police borrowed heavily from external sources and had a source of Monero transaction information (such as from an exchange) in order to faciliate this tracing.

I spoke with Rose O' Leary from DarkFi about the problem of centralization in app development and pointed to the recent Telegram saga with Pavel Durov. Rose talked about an alternative to GitHub, where you can contribute code to any project anonymously.

Although Rose was also quick to point out that she can’t necessarily protect herself once her image is online and on social media.

⚡️Spiritual Successor to Samourai Wallet, Ashigaru Wallet Launched

Users of Samourai wallet may reminisce about its standout privacy features including CoinJoins, PayNyms, and the like. After having their infrastructure seized by the DOJ, Samourai users were left without an option and had to migrate to other wallets.

Now, a new project has risen up out of the ashes, keeping many of the same features and honoring the Samourai legacy.

The Ashigaru Open Source Project was established in the months after the United States Department of Justice brought charges against the founders of the self custodial Bitcoin application, Samourai Wallet. At the time of arrest, multiple servers that hosted documentation, code repositories and message coordination services were either seized or failed to remain online, presumably due to being no longer administered. With the indicted individuals placed under restrictive conditions on bail, it became clear that all software development had ceased.

Aims and Goals
We believe anyone should be able to engage in peaceful, voluntary and private commerce on the internet without tracking, surveillance or censorship. The Ashigaru Open Source Project develops, releases and maintains free and open source software that makes extensive use of both published code from active projects as well as those archived in the public domain.

Open, unrestricted communication networks are utilized to ensure continued availability. The software released by the project will always have a low barrier to entry, be non discriminatory, never expose users to counterparty risk and provide as much protection as possible for those transacting on a public blockchain.

What’s in a name?
As former users of Samourai Wallet, yet having no association or relationship with the core team, “Ashigaru” was chosen to represent individuals of humble origin whom, borne out of necessity, would equip themselves with their own tools and rise to the occasion during a period of great change.

⚡️Stomp The Brakes, US Road Safety Rules Requires Automatic Braking By 2029

Ever drive a new car and see that it slows itself down when you get close to the car in front of you? That's an automatic emergency braking (AEB) system, something that automakers 'voluntarily' started putting in all vehicles.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is requiring all cars to be able to stop and avoid contact with the car in front of them at 62 mph. Automakers see this as an impossible task.

Large auto insurance co-op AAA released a research report showing that newer cars with AEB (2024) were twice as likely to avoid a collision than a 2017 vehicle at speeds of 34 mile per hour.

These newer systems use both camera and radar. What most people don't realize is the radar emits extremely high frequency mmWave technology typically above 50 Ghz.

Doing some research I found AEB radar companies advertising anywhere from 60-80 GHz. The average radiation coming from a microwave oven is about 2.5 GHz - most people are sitting next to something emitting far more dense radiation. And type of radiation is going to be all over our roadways.

Yes the NHTSA suggests in their studies that AEB systems can lower rear-end crashes by 49%, but at what cost to our long term health?

As Bioinitiative 2012 points out, "Health consequences have not been identified nor been factored into public safety limits" for new 5G wireless technologies. There is already a mountain of studies indicating negative bioeffects for the lower frequencies.

Can we find a better way to prevent accidents besides surveillance and extreme radiation?

I'm going to be holding onto my old car for as long as possible -.-

Microsoft may train its AI on everything you type in Word and Excel via the Connected Experiences feature that analyzes user-created content. The default setting allows Microsoft to use articles, artwork, and other documents open in Office applications to train AI without asking for user consent in each case. So anyone concerned about protecting their intellectual property or confidential information may want to do something with it. For example, the user can opt out of this feature by disabling the appropriate option in Office settings. However, on a Windows PC it is seven clicks deep in the File menu.

The company's website contains a document called the " Microsoft Services Agreement ." It states that to the extent necessary to provide services to you and others, protect you and the services, and improve Microsoft products and services, you grant Microsoft a worldwide, royalty-free license to use the intellectual property associated with your content, such as copying, storing, transmitting, reformatting, displaying, and distributing your content on the services by means of communications. Doesn't sound great.

Microsoft 365's official X account is denying the accusations.

⚡️Running App Publicized Location of Presidents & World Leaders

A recent investigation by French newspaper Le Monde uncovered significant privacy risks involving high-ranking government officials' location through their use of the fitness tracking application Strava.

The investigation revealed that the movements of multiple world leaders—including U.S. President Joe Biden and President Donald Trump—can be tracked through their security personnel's use of the popular fitness platform via location data displayed on public profiles within the app.
