Signal is capitalizing on the whole Telegram situation by making the rounds on tech journalism liked Wired and Gizmodo. These outlets make Signal out to be some sort of anarchist hacker startup founded in some basement. This interview she did with Gizmodo gave her a bunch of softball questions, some interesting tidbits in there though:

- it costs $40M a year to run Signal. Nobody bothers to ask where the money comes from. 🧐
- she protested against the DOD drone contract for the US military, and left her job at Google for that

Telegram Founder & CEO Charged with Wide Range of Crimes in France

Pavel Durov, the entrepreneur who founded the online communications tool Telegram, was charged on Wednesday (Aug. 28) in France with a wide range of crimes related to illicit activity on the app and barred from leaving the country.

It was a rare move by legal authorities to hold a top technology executive personally liable for the behavior of users on a major messaging platform, escalating the debate over the role of technology companies in online speech and the limits of their responsibility.

Mr. Durov, 39, who was detained by French authorities on Saturday (Aug. 24), was placed under formal investigation on a range of charges, including complicity in managing an online platform to enable illegal transactions; complicity in crimes such as enabling the distribution of child sexual abuse material, drug trafficking and fraud; and a refusal to cooperate with law enforcement.

Laure Beccuau, the Paris prosecutor, said in a statement that Durov had been ordered to pay bail of 5 million euros, or about $5.5 million, and was released but must check in at a police station twice a week.

A leaked pitch deck from Cox Media Group (CMG)—a marketing partner who actively works with Facebook, Google, and Amazon—has brought to light the existence of "Active Listening" technology that uses artificial intelligence to capture data from real-time “private conversations” on mainstream smart phones and other microphone-enabled smart devices.

This technology claims to leverage AI to analyze voice data collected from smartphone microphones, combining it with behavioral data from over 470 sources.

Novel work by our team: an NFC tag system which upon tapping, returns a random number signed by a private key contained in secure storage within the NFC tag and the random number as a parameter in a URL.

What this allows: a server which holds the corresponding public key can verify a user has tapped an NFC tag and it cannot be faked.

Use cases: self-sovereign decentralised payments, proof of attendance without centralised points of failure and more.

Breaking new grounds in cryptography. 🔐

Public school districts across the United States, including those in New Jersey and Wisconsin, have recently implemented visitor management systems utilizing facial recognition AI. While proponents argue that these systems enhance school safety, they also represent a significant escalation of the all seeing eye of state sponsored surveillance in children's daily lives.

The Visitor Aware system, developed by Singlewire Software, collects a vast array of personal data from school visitors, including facial photos, and cross-references this information against various government watch lists.

⚡️Telegram Plays Ball and Commits To Moderation

Last week on Telegram, chats were ablaze with rumors that direct messaging on the platform lost its encryption, after CEO Pavel Durov posted bail from a French jail and Telegram made a quiet update to their FAQ.

What’s the impact of this? The door is now open to Telegram handing over message data related to specific accounts, groups, or message based on requests from authorities.

Telegram’s latest official post indicates that they’ll be taking moderation and these requests more seriously. And with Pavel on a no-fly list and reporting to police twice a week, these changes may be indefinite.

BREAKING: Pagers Explode Across Lebanon in Israeli Attack Against Hezbollah w/ Elijah J. Magnier

At least nine people were killed, and nearly 3,000 wounded, according to the latest reports, after pagers that were used by Hezbollah members exploded across Lebanon on Tuesday.

Lebanon's information minister said the government condemned the attack as an act of “Israeli aggression,” and Hezbollah blamed Israel, and said it would receive “its fair punishment.”

Veteran Journalist Elijah J. Magnier noted that the affected pagers appear to be from a shipment that Hezbollah received recently that had gone through multiple checkpoints in multiple countries before reaching their destination—an indicator that Israel planned this attack in advance, and then waited for the time to inflict terror on the people of Lebanon.

Earlier this month, major tech outlets picked up on findings from iVerify, a security company who claimed they discovered a malicious Android package (‘Showcase.apk’) on millions of phones.

"The app vulnerability leaves millions of Android Pixel devices susceptible to man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks, giving cybercriminals the ability to inject malicious code and dangerous spyware."

XMPP is a messaging protocol developed in the 90s, has previously scaled to millions of users, is free and decentralized, and offers excellent messaging and privacy features including end to end encrypted messaging, calls, and video calls.
