🇿🇦 A bill that passed in South Africa’s Parliament will repeal the Expropriation Act of 1975 and will allow the state to expropriate private land arbitrarily “for a public purpose or in the public interest.”

Here is the controversial statement in the government’s website:

In terms of this law, an expropriating authority may not expropriate property arbitrarily or for a purpose other than a public purpose or in the public interest.

The bill was supported by ANC and other left wing parties and was opposed by DA, IFP and Freedom Front Plus. Farming association TLU SA general manager, Bennie van Zyl, said the act raises serious concerns about property rights in South Africa:
