What are organic products under Russian laws?
Federal law on “Organic products” outlines main requirements that a farmer must comply with to be able to use “Organic” label on his products:

• Separation of the production of organic products from the production of non-organic products

• Prohibition of the use of agrochemicals, pesticides, antibiotics, growth and fattening stimulants, hormonal drugs, except for those approved for use by national, interstate and international standards in the field of organic production in the Russian Federation

• A ban on the use of embryo transplantation, cloning and methods of genetic engineering, genetically engineered and transgenic organisms, as well as products manufactured using genetically engineered and transgenic organisms

• Prohibition on the use of the hydroponic method of growing plants

• Prohibition of the use of ionizing radiation

• The use of biological agents to control pests, plant and animal diseases, as well as the implementation of measures to prevent losses caused by harmful organisms to plants or products of plant origin, which are based on the protection of entomophages (natural enemies of plant pests), on the selection of plant species and varieties, on the selection of crop rotation, optimal methods of plant cultivation and methods of heat treatment of organic products

• Selection of breeds or types of farm animals, considering their adaptive abilities and resistance to diseases, creation of conditions conducive to the preservation of their health, veterinary well-being, natural reproduction, and ensuring optimal sanitary and hygienic indicators of their maintenance

• The use of food additives, technological aids, flavorings, flavor enhancers, enzyme preparations, trace elements, vitamins, amino acids, provided for by national, interstate and international standards in force in the Russian Federation in the field of organic production

• The use of biological, including probiotic, microorganisms traditionally used in food processing, the use of measures to protect products of animal origin from microbiological spoilage based on the interaction of microorganisms in the natural environment

• Prohibition of mixing organic products with non-organic products during storage and transportation of organic products

• Prohibition of the use of packaging, consumer and transport containers that may lead to contamination of organic products and the environment, including the use of polyvinyl chloride for packaging, consumer and transport containers.

Confirmation of conformity of production of organic products

Confirmation of the conformity of organic production is carried out in the form of voluntary certification in accordance with the requirements of the legislation of the Russian Federation on technical regulation to establish the conformity of organic production with national, interstate and international standards in the field of organic production in the Russian Federation.

Voluntary confirmation of the conformity of organic production is carried out by accredited certification bodies in the field of organic production in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation on accreditation in the national accreditation system, which issue a certificate of conformity of organic production.

Certification procedure

Certification includes several stages:

1. Applying to an accredited certification body. The manufacturer must provide documents, including information on production technologies, raw materials used and processing methods.

2. Production audit. Experts check whether all the stated methods are followed in practice.

3. Laboratory tests in an accredited laboratory.

4. Issuing a certificate upon successful completion of certification.

5. Annual inspection of the certified facility during the validity period of the certificate.

The certificate is valid for 3 years, but for its renewal it is necessary to regularly confirm compliance with the stand
