📰 Google's Kage Project Rethinks Linux Kernel Security With Isolated Device Drivers
by George WhittakerGoogle is exploring a new approach to Linux kernel security that could significantly change how device drivers interact with the operating system. The experimental project, known as Kage, uses compiler-based sandboxing to isolate drivers inside the kernel, potentially limiting the damage caused by memory corruption, programming errors, and exploitable vulnerabilities without requiring drivers to run as separate user-space...

Ubuntu Core Desktop is back, baby
Canonical has announced it’s ‘accelerating’ development of Ubuntu Core Desktop, its immutable, snap-based version of its desktop OS. Ubuntu Core Desktop was announced in 2023 and made available in a preview form, but despite the general notion of the immutable build being the future of the distro, there’s been no clear momentum or direction on when or how it’ll get there. That’s changing, says Jon Seager, the VP of Engineering at Canonical. A newly-formed Ubuntu Core Desktop team within Canonical will work on getting Ubuntu Core Desktop into shape ahead of the 27.04 release next year. But Seager says the […]

Ghostty 1.4 released with big improvements
A major new release of Ghostty, the open-source terminal emulator, has been released. Ghostty 1.4.0 brings a varied set of changes, including much-welcome performance optimisations on Linux and macOS, plus better SHH integration, tab split management and 100% complete Kitty graphics protocol support animation and relative placements, making it the first terminal besides Kitty to do so. If you’re someone using TUI tools or script to render images in the terminal, that’s a nice bump. Physical/resident memory usage is reduced too. Ghostty 1.4.0 compresses off-screen scrollback when the terminal is idle. This lowers the amount of RAM used by text-heavy […]
