Windows 11’s October updates begin auditing ReFS volumes on removable drives, extending hardening already introduced in Windows 10 with October’s Windows 10 update. Microsoft plans to make blocking the default in January 2027, giving IT teams time to find affected devices and move data. ReFS, Microsoft’s Resilient File System, is not supported on removable media.
