📰 Google's Kage Project Rethinks Linux Kernel Security With Isolated Device Drivers

by George WhittakerGoogle is exploring a new approach to Linux kernel security that could significantly change how device drivers interact with the operating system. The experimental project, known as Kage, uses compiler-based sandboxing to isolate drivers inside the kernel, potentially limiting the damage caused by memory corruption, programming errors, and exploitable vulnerabilities without requiring drivers to run as separate user-space...

Ubuntu’s App Center now supports installing media codecs

The new Add-ons page added to App Center in Ubuntu 26.10 is now able to install media codecs. An opt-in setting to “install restricted codecs” is shown in the Ubuntu OS installer. Not everyone thinks to select it at install time or, if installing without an active internet connection, the box is greyed out. As App Center does not show system packages in search results, i.e., media codecs, adding a GUI where people might think to look will make after-the-fact setup a smidgen easier. While Rhythmbox can trigger an install dialog for missing codecs the attempting to play a file […]

REA (Reverse Engineer Anything), the fastest-rising repo, uses AI agents to clone closed-source software

Rob Shocks explains how REA connects AI coding agents to reverse-engineering tools so they can inspect software without its source code. A coding agent can use what it learns to build a new implementation or similar feature; REA itself doesn’t build the software or recover the original source. The approach reduces the effort needed to inspect binaries—and makes safe, authorized use essential.

Economics Nobel laureate Daron Acemoglu rates AI -6 on a -10 to +10 scale

Nobel economist Daron Acemoglu says AI’s progress in coding and math shouldn’t be mistaken for a fast transformation of every job: real workplaces are messier, and productivity gains take time. He warns that AI may undermine student learning, and argues the United States is too focused on foundational models while China applies AI and robotics in factories. His rating remains at -6 on a scale from -10 to +10. However, one might question how much weight to give an assessment from someone who describes themselves as 'behind the frontier' in AI usage.

AI pioneer Karpathy sees a widening capability gap

Andrej Karpathy is an AI researcher and co-founder of OpenAI who previously led AI at Tesla. He says understanding of LLM capabilities is splitting into a steep funnel: roughly 6 billion people have barely encountered LLMs, while about 5,000 have internal access to frontier systems. Between them, he estimates 1–2 billion casual users and 20 million professionals using advanced models for complex math and coding work.

Enterprise AI’s bottleneck has shifted from technology to people

As technical barriers to enterprise AI adoption ease, organisational readiness is emerging as the harder problem. LogicMonitor’s Karthik Sj says businesses need clear governance, expert oversight and coordinated teams to turn AI pilots into safe, useful operations. AI is also moving from experiment to boardroom priority.
