A system generated by the mind itself, in which every square on the board appears to hold significance and necessity. A thought encounters another thought. A simple emotional response develops into a question. A brief moment of uncertainty expands into prolonged attempts to obtain certainty. Intrusive mental images, unwanted thoughts, and fears that may appear fundamentally inconsistent with one’s values, identity, and sense of self. The individual begins searching for confirmation that they remain unchanged, that their thoughts are not a reflection of their character, and that they are capable of experiencing everyday life without continuously analyzing and questioning every aspect of their existence. While another person may simply remove their hand from the game board and conclude the process, a mind affected by obsessive-compulsive disorder continues attempting to identify the final correct move the definitive answer that will restore a sense of safety and certainty. Recovery is not achieved through discovering the perfect move. It is achieved through recognizing that not every thought requires resolution, not every fear requires a response, and not every uncertainty requires control.
