This is the story of two parents racing against time to find a cure for their son’s rare disease, while pharma turns a blind eye.
Erik has asparagine synthetase deficiency (ASNSD), a rare neurometabolic condition with no available treatment. Because so few cases exist, major pharmaceutical companies have little incentive to invest in finding a cure.
But Mariann Vegh and her husband, Balázs Karancsi, refused to give up. They are now working to raise funds and galvanise research in the hope of finding a treatment in time for their son.

The more civilians actively participate in hostilities, the more the line between civilians and combatants becomes blurred, says the ICRC.
“In several of today’s armed conflicts, the ICRC has documented cases in which civilians were shot or detained because they were suspected of using their mobile phones to spy for parties to the conflict,” Tilmann Rodenhäuser, a legal adviser at the ICRC and co-author of the report, told Swissinfo.

Online deepfakes are designed to vilify, mislead or sow confusion. Newer artificial intelligence (AI) tools have drastically increased the scale and scope of deepfakes.
DeepStrike, a Cybersecurity company, says the number of detected cases surged from 500,000 in 2023 to more than eight million last year. The Swiss platform clickandstop.ch, which was set up to record cases of cyberbullying and child sex abuse, revealed a 63% rise in reported cases last year.

Happy Friday, everyone! 👋
Before we head into the weekend, here’s a quick round-up of some of the stories making headlines in Switzerland this week.
1️⃣ A Swiss company is building a vast network of underground vaults in central Switzerland to safeguard the assets of some of the world’s richest individuals. Security is set to be second to none, with around 20 vaults buried beneath more than 100 metres of solid rock.
2️⃣ Switzerland will provide CHF1 million ($1.2 million) in emergency assistance to Colombia following a devastating earthquake. While it will not deploy a search-and-rescue team, the funding will help provide food, clean water and temporary shelter for those affected.
3️⃣ The ongoing drought continues to take a toll across Switzerland. In July, the Federal Office for the Environment recorded historic low water levels at 11 river and stream monitoring stations, with water scarcity affecting 99% of the country.
And that’s your weekly catch-up. 🇨🇭

Summer activities on Switzerland’s lakes and rivers are hugely popular, but their dangers are sometimes underestimated. Every year, about 50 drownings are recorded.
About 90% occur in rivers and lakes, where currents, cold water, poor visibility and limited supervision increase risks. 👉 https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/climate-adaptation/in-water-loving-switzerland-about-50-people-drown-every-year/91883895
