Types of Haemorrhage

1. Primary haemorrhage
Occurs immediately:
Due to;
• Injury
• Surgery
Caused by direct vessel damage

2. Reactionary haemorrhage
Occurs within 24 hours
due to:
• Dislodgment of clot after resuscitation
• Normalization of blood pressure
• Vasodilatation
• May also be due to technical failure
Like Slippage of a ligature

3. Secondary haemorrhage
Occurs 7–14 days after injury or surgery
Caused by sloughing of the vessel wall
Precipitated by:
• Infection
• Pressure necrosis (e.g. from a drain)
• Malignancy

Signs & symptoms of acute limb ischemia
Note:
Sudden severe pain in a previously asymptomatic patient ➜ embolic occlusion
While
Ischemic pain (less severe) in a patient with a history of claudication ➜ thrombosis
