The Mystery of Blue Lava and the Kawah Ijen Volcano

Indonesia’s Kawah Ijen volcano spews out blue lava thanks to its incredibly high levels of sulfur.
Kawah Ijen is a giant, active volcano on the island of Java with a crater that contains the world's largest acidic lake.

It is one of the world’s most unusual volcanoes because instead of producing the usual red lava and black smoke, its underground activities result in bright blue flames rising into the air. Some people even call it electric blue fire.

Certainly. Here’s a neutral explanation of the deeper meaning behind the phrase “it is what it is”—and why it’s often misunderstood.

The Essence of “It Is What It Is”

This phrase, when rooted in a Zen or contemplative mindset, reflects a state of non-resistance to reality. It is a recognition that the present moment—what has already occurred or is currently unfolding—is a fact. It is neither good nor bad in itself; it simply is.

This perspective is about clarity and presence, not passivity.

What It Does NOT Mean
• It does not imply that one approves of the situation.
• It does not imply surrender to injustice or inaction.
• It does not mean settling for less or giving up.
• It does not say that things can’t or shouldn’t change.

What It Actually Means
• It’s an acknowledgment: “This is what’s happening right now.”
• It’s the removal of personal projection, emotional resistance, or wishful reinterpretation.
• It allows one to face reality as it is, before trying to improve or influence it.
• It places the individual in a position of presence and clear seeing, rather than denial or agitation.

The Common Misunderstanding

To someone unfamiliar with contemplative or Zen-influenced thinking, the phrase may sound like resignation or complacency. This misunderstanding usually stems from a goal-oriented or control-driven mindset, where acknowledging what is feels like accepting that it must remain that way.

In truth, acknowledging what is—without distortion—is the only stable foundation for meaningful action or change.

Why This Distinction Matters

There is a key difference between:
• Rejecting the present in hopes of a better future, which often leads to stress, frustration, and reactionary choices.
• Fully accepting the present, then acting from clarity, which leads to thoughtful, grounded, and effective decisions.

The first resists reality. The second sees it—and then moves forward wisely.

In summary, “it is what it is” is not a statement of defeat. It is a practice of lucid awareness. Only by facing reality as it stands—without denial or emotional distortion—can one respond to it with true power and wisdom.
