I've never seen something give me so much stability, so much concentration, and so much vigour as the Quran has. The power the Quran has in increasing the iman, in healing the hearts, in removing sadness, in busying a person with khayr, in strengthening the mind, sharpening the intellect, exercising using ones thought and contemplation. So likewise the opposite applies, that when I am not right with the book of Allah I see its affects on my mood, I see it in my behaviour, my impatience, my haste. I see it in my lack of fluctuante thoughts and feelings. I see it in my iman, that when I am absent and away from it for too long my heart longs for it, as if it is yearning to read it the way a thirsty person yearns for water on a hot day. I've not felt comfort like I have with the Quran - that the world could be so heavy upon my shoulders - and all of the anger, fear, emotion, tears, confusion, are bottled up and sealed tight yet upon reciting the speech of the One who knows and the One who decrees, that tight cap loosens and the words of Allah hit a cord that the words of no other can do.

I recall listening to a dars where the shaykh mentioned that ibn uthaymin رحمه الله would always mention these lines of poetry in his gatherings by ابن عبد القوي regarding persevering your Quran classes:

‎I always think about these lines, and how the consistency in preserving the Quran and attending its circles affects the heart. So hold onto those classes, don’t stop. Even if your portion is week, even if you sinned the night before, even if you were absent for too long - for it softens the hardest of hearts, and with time you will see the affect of the Quran in your life. If not through it’s consistency, then through the affect it has on you if you abandon it.

Tend to your herd

From the greatest of honor of memorizing the Qur'an is being able to recite it in prayer, especially in the depth of the night. May Allāh, The Most Bountiful, grant us this beautiful gift.

Allāh says, "Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for understanding and more suitable for (reciting Allāh's) words." [ Surat Al-Muzzammil 73:6, Tafsir Ibn Kathir]

However, this sweetness of the Qur'an can be shortlived when we come back to that same surah few weeks later and find it littered with mistakes, or entirely forgotten. The pressure of retaining old memorization has pushed many off the path of memorizing the Qur'an. But this was bound to happen, as the Prophet ﷺ said:

"Keep refreshing your knowledge of the Qur'an, for I swear by Him in Whose Hand is the life of Mahammad, it is more liable to escape than camels which are hobbled." [Sahih Muslim 791]

So what can we do to tend to our herd and stop the camels from escaping?

1. Change of mindset

Many see revision of old surah as something secondary. Imagine bringing in new camels into your herd everyday - yet none are being looked after. Inevitably, the herd will slowly die or the camels will escape to where they are better treated.

Regular revision of old surah is how we tend to the new surahs we let into our life. Letting in a new surah can be relatively easy, but tending to it and nurturing it over time is the real "living with the Qur'an". In this regard, we need to change our mindset and treat revision as primary - revision IS the hifdh (preservation).

2. Take action

📝 We need to have a written schedule that we can easily stick to based on our capability and circumstances. Something written always makes things more serious! The schedule should cater for at least the following: old surahs, recently memorized surah, and the new ayaat we are currently memorizing.

🗓 Having specific appointments for reviewing can help stay on track, e.g. one day in the week, recite new memorization to a teacher, and on another day, recite old surahs with an online partner, etc.

📵 It's also really helpful to put conditions in place that force us to achieve our daily goals, e.g. "I will not check my WhatsApp until I do one page of revision" , or "I'm not allowed to memorize a new ayah until I've reviewed such and such surah."

Yes, I know, this might sound like a bit too much, but, Allāh says:

"And those who strive in our cause – We will surely guide them to Our ways (in this world and hereafter). And indeed, Allāh is with the doers of good." [Al-'Ankabut 29:69]

Ibn Abi Hatim narrated that Abbas Al-Hamdani Abu Ahmad -- one of the people of Akka (Palestine) -- said, concerning the ayah:
"Those who act upon what they know, Allāh will guide them to that which they do not know." [Tafsir Ibn Kathir]

In this context, if we strive hard in taking care of the ayaat we have already memorized (by understanding its Tafsir, acting accordingly and reviewing it regularly) then, by the grace of Allāh, our doors for the new ayaat will be opened.

And last, but not least...

3. Take precaution!

The great Imam Shafi’ee was known for his amazing hifdh. But, eventually he too started to find some deficiency in his memorization and saught advise from his Shaykh, the famous Waki’ bin Al-Jarrah.

He captures the incident in his lines of prose:

شَكَوْتُ إِلَى وَكِيعٍ سُوءَ حِفْظِي;
وَقَالَ بِأَنَّ الْعِلْمَ نُورٌ ;

“I complained to Waki' of a deficiency in my ability to memorizie,
so he advised me to leave off sins,
and said, "Verily, knowledge is light,
and the light of Allāh is not given to a sinner."

[Al-Jawāb al-Kāfī’ P. 54]

This is, as Allāh says, "so have Taqwa of Allāh (i.e. work in obedience towards Allāh and refrain from sinning), and Allāh will teach you... " [Al-Baqarah, 2:282]

We ask Allāh to grant us tawfiq and purify our intentions, and to make our Qur'an an evidence for us, not against us, on the Day of Judgement.

So if Iblīs comes to you and says,
“How long now have you supplicated for this and you have not seen a response?”

Then say,
“I devotedly worship through making duʿāʾ, and I am certain that the response is incumbent.” Otherwise, perhaps its delay is due to some benefit, and even if it does not occur, devoted worship and humility still take place.

In one of his writings, after highlighting Allah's great might and power over the creation, ibn al-Jawzi (rahimahullah) then wrote:

I swear by Allah, if a thinking believer were to recite

- surah Al-Hadeed,
- the end of surah Al-Hashr,
- Ayat Al-Kursi, and
- surah Al-Ikhlas

with reflection and contemplation,

his heart would surely crack open out of fear of Allah and he would be shaken to his very core by Allah's greatness.
