Have dates in your ṣuḥūr

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "How excellent are dates as the believer's ṣuḥūr."

(Abū Dāwud 2345)

إذا كان أوّلُ ليلةٍ من شهر رمضان: صُفِّدت الشياطين ومرَدةُ الجنّ، وغُلِّقت أبوابُ النّار فلم يُفتح منها باب، وفُتِّحت أبوابُ الجنَّة فلم يُغلق منها باب، ويُنادي مُنادٍ يا باغيَ الخيرِ أقبِل، ويا باغيَ الشرّ أقصِر وللَّهِ عُتقاءُ من النّارِ، وذلك كلُّ ليلة.

(صحيح الترمذي ٦٨٢)

the Messenger of Allah said: "On the first night of the month of Ramadan, the Shayatin are shackled, the jinns are restrained, the gates of the Fires are shut such that no gate among them would be opened. The gates of Paradise are opened such that no gate among them would be closed, and a caller calls: 'O seeker of the good; come near!' and 'O seeker of evil; stop! For there are those whom Allah frees from the Fire.' And that is every night."

‏عن عبد الله بن المبارك، عن أبي بكر بن أبي مريم، قال: سمعت مشيختنا، يقولون:

إذا حضر شهر رمضان، قد حضر مطهر ويقولون: انبسطوا بالنفقة فيه، فإنها تضاعف كالنفقة في سبيل الله عز وجل ويقولون: التسبيحة فيه أفضل من ألف تسبيحة في غيره


It was said: "If the month of Ramadān arrives, know that a purifying force has arrived."

It was said: "Rejoice in spending (from ur wealth) in it, for it multiplies as a spending in Allah's cause."

It was said: "Making tasbīh in it is better than a 1000 tasbīh in other months."

As sa'di ( may Allah have mercy upon him) said regarding the ayah

وبالأسحار هم يستغفرون

"And in the hours before dawn”, which is just before dawn

“they were (found) asking (Allah) for forgiveness”.

So they made their prayer last until the time just before dawn, then they sat, concluding their night-time worship (qiyaam al-layl) by asking Allah, may He be exalted, for forgiveness, in the manner of a sinner seeking forgiveness for his sins. There is a special virtue in praying for forgiveness in the time before dawn that is not present at any other time, as Allah, may He be exalted, says describing the people of faith and obedience (interpretation of the meaning): “and those who pray and beg Allah’s Pardon in the last hours of the night” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:17].

سبحان الله ! .. المكروب عندما يسمع هذه الكلمات يحمدِ الله لأنهُ لم يَصل للحظة التي هوَ أحوجُ فيها للفرج، فيعلم يقينًا أن عاقبة أمره فرجا ويُسرًا وأنّ الله بعلمه وحكمته مُحيطٌ بتفاصيل همِّه فيطمئن ويأنَس 🌿

‏واللهِ ما ضاقت الدُّنيا على صاحب القرآن إلاّ وجعل الله له من بين أطباق الهَمّ مخرجًا .. أليس الله بكافٍ أهله ؟ بلى وربّي 🤍

In part of his discussion on the month of Ramadan, ibn Rajab mentioned:

[كان الزهري إذا دخل رمضان يقول : إنَّما هو تلاوة القرآن، وإطعام الطعام .]

When Ramadan came, al-Zuhri used to say, "There is only reciting the Qur'an and feeding others."

فإن الصيام يعود المسلم على الأخلاق الطيبة، ويسهل عليه فعل الطاعات وتجنب المحرمات والمكروهات، ويعوده الإحسان إلى المحتاجين، ويلين قلبه لذكر الله، ففوائد الصيام عظيمة وكثيرة، وهي فوائد ظاهرة يعرفها الناس ، فيظهر على الصائم من الخوف والخشية والانكسار والقرب من الخير مالا يظهر على غيره من المفطرين .

Indeed, fasting accustoms the Muslim to having good character and makes easy upon him the performance of acts of obedience and the avoidance of affairs that are prohibited and deemed distasteful. It accustoms him to being kind to those who are in need and to softening his heart for the remembrance of Allah.

The benefits of fasting are tremendous and they are many. They are benefits which are apparent and known by mankind, for it can be seen of a fasting person that he has fear and reverence of Allah, as well as subjugation of his soul and seeking nearness to Allah by way of good deeds, the likes of which are not seen upon those who do not fast.

‏﴿ یَـٰۤأَیُّهَا ٱلَّذِینَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِۦ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسۡلِمُونَ ﴾ 🤍🌿

” والمسارعة في الخيرات دلالة على حسن الإسلام، وتمكّن الإيمان من القلب؛ لأنّ الإنسان إذا كان على يقين من لقاء ربّه ‎ﷻ، وبما بعد الموت؛ فإنّه يكون مجتدا في تحصيل الخير لنفسه؛ حتّى يلقى جزاء ذلك عند ربّه. “

“What is better, reciting the Qur’ān or memorizing the Qur’ān (during Ramadān)?

“No, reciting the Qur’ān takes place during Ramadān and memorizing takes place after Ramadān.”

imām ʿāmir al-shuʿabī said:

when you read the qurʾān, recite it in a way that your ears hear it and your heart understands it, for verily, the ears are the witnesses between the tongue and the heart.

From Jafar who said: ‘I heard Malik Bin Dinaar saying:

❝Concern for the Hereafter leaves your heart due to the amount you grieve over the Dunyaa and concern for the Dunyaa leaves your heart due to the amount that you grieve over the Hereafter.❞

أنزل الله علينا لباسين:

لباس يستر عورة الجسد ويزينه، ولباس يستر عورة القلب ويزينه.

وهو التقوى وبينهما تلازم؛ فكلما زاد لباس القلب بالتقوى زاد ستر الجسد باللباس، وكلما نقص لباس القلب من التقوى تعرى الجسد.

Allah sent us two forms of clothing.

Clothing that covers the nakedness of the body and adorns it, and clothing that covers the awrah of the heart and adorns it, and it is piety. They are intrinsically connected, and there is an inseparability between them.

For whenever the heart is clothed with piety, the more the body is covered with clothing – and whenever there is deficiency in clothing the heart with piety, the more the body is exposed.

May Allah protect us from His anger and guide us to what He is pleased with and loves.

﴿وبالأسحار هم يستغفرون﴾

عن نافع أن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما، كان يحيي الليل صلاةً ثم يقول: يا نافع، أسحَرْنا؟ فيقول: لا. فيعاود الصلاة، فإذا قلت: نعم! قعد يستغفر، ويدعو حتى يُصْبح.


تفسير الطبري (6/ 266).

Shame on you! …in that you don’t reflect upon the blessing (of this Quran) that Allah has bestowed upon you!
