Imām Ash Shāfi’i was asked: What is the greatest act through which a slave gets closer to Allah?
The Imām (may Allah have mercy on him) cried, and then said: It is for Allah to look at your heart and see that you do not want anything from this world or the hereafter except for Him سبحانه

One of the Salaf stated:
"You will not find anyone who is undutiful to his parents except that he is an arrogant, wretched person."
ثم قرأ: {وَبَرًّۢا بِوَٰلِدَتِى وَلَمْ يَجْعَلْنِى جَبَّارًا شَقِيًّا}
Then he recited: {He made me dutiful to my mother and He didn't make me to be an arrogant, wretched person.}

Sheikh ibn uthaymeen رحمه الله was asked about the causes of the hardness of the heart and he answered:
the causes of the hardness of the heart are many , from amongst them are :
turning away from the rememberance of Allah, that a person doesn't remember Allah much, and you find him not remembering Allah in his heart in the obligatory prayers, he recites, bows, prostrates, glorifies and invokes but his heart is negligent, this is from the ways of hardness.
and also from the causes are :
abundance of jesting ,playing and passing time with the friends and family, and this is why the companions used to say to the prophet
"when we are in your company, we fear and be witness over the Hell-Fire and Paradise but when we we go away and attend to our wives, our children, our business; most of these things (pertaining to After-life) slip out of our minds, to which the prophet replied 'time should be devoted (to the worldly affairs) and time should be devoted (to prayer)'"
and from the causes of hardness of the heart are :
devotion to the world and preferring it over the afterlife and verily they are those men who gather wealth and for it are numerous ways, and for this , it is upon the man when he finds his heart being hardnened , he initiates to treat it before it solidifies and be incapable of being treated.

As for recitation outside of the prayer, then the best recitation is during the night, and the last part of the night is better than the first part of the night.” (page 75)

You'll Die Between Two Good Deeds...
Muʿādh b. Jabal رضي الله عنه advised his son:
"My son! Pray the prayer of he who is just about to leave, and realise that you might not be able to pray ever again. And know, my son, that the believer dies between two good deeds; one that he performed, and one that he intended to perform later on."

The True Test Is When You Have The Desire Aswell As The Ability
Ibn al-Jawzī رحمه الله said:
"Do you know what a man is? A true man is he who finds himself alone with sins, and has the power to commit them and his lusts urges him to quench its thirst, but he thinks about Allāh looking at him, so he feels embarrassed from angering Him and thus his desire goes away.
But it seems that you only abandon things that you do not have desire for, or things that are not desirable in the first place, or even things that you are unable to have! This is your habit!"

The Prophet then said, ‘I had recited it to the jinn the night they met with me, and they had a better response than yours. Every time I recited His statement, ‘Which of His blessings will you both then deny?’ They would say, ‘Not a single blessing of yours, our Lord, can we deny; to You alone belongs all praise.’"
