it was said to some of the wise men : what is the likeness of the dunya?
he said : dreams of the sleeper

the dunya was mentioned in the presence of hasan al basari and he said : dreams during the sleep or fleeting shadow... and the wise do not get deceived of its like.

Ibn al-Jawzi رحمه الله said:

“You should know that the beauty of a person’s Islām lies in his leaving those things that do not concern him.

When Allāh wills evil for a person, He puts him through the test of argumentation – when Allāh wills good for a person, He inspires him to do good deeds.

If Allāh takes away your tongue and gives back to you your heart, He has been extremely kind to you; but if He takes away from you your heart and gives you back your tongue, then know that you are in a serious calamity.”

ways to attain zuhd

1: become moderate in spending

2: spend any spare time in devotion to Allāh

3: relieve any emotional anxiety

4: adorn yourself with the manners and character of the prophets of Allāh and the truthful ones

explanations

1: being moderate in spending means to spend only on what you will be in need of. this doesn’t mean to refrain from the essentials such as: nourishment for his body, clothing, his abode, marriage and the likes.

if you become so busy in the worldly activities accumulating wealth with all of your time, much of your time will be wasted and he will barely make time for devotion to his Lord and Sustainer. the slave should take advantage of any time he has and devote himself to his Lord. as it is said, time is like a sword; if you do not cut it will cut you (meaning, if you do not take control of it, it will take control of you, by cutting you).

2: you must spend your time in devotion; using all of your time to get closer and closer to your Lord. this means through your nourishment (your food, his drink and his world possessions), marriage, sleep, or through resting, you bring yourself closer to his Lord, but with the condition that you make your intention to do these things for your Lord’s sake, hoping to be rewarded for doing them and refraining from doing the things that invoke His (Allāh’s) anger upon His slaves.

3: you must relieve yourself from emotional anxiety. you try to prevent those things that will cause distress and agitation in your heart due to the affairs of this life, be it hope, love, fear, hatred, or his labouring. you will not taste the sweetness of zuhd unless you relieve yourself from anxiety and distress of the heart. hence, the slave’s heart should not be troubling him, and indeed zuhd relieves the slave’s heart from this.

4: you must adorn yourself with the mannerisms of the prophets and the truthful ones. you should try to adorn yourself with the way of the best of Allāh’s creation, the prophets, because from amongst all of the people they knew best how to live a life of zuhd in this dunyā.

- kitāb az-zuhd l’ibn al qayyim al jawzīyah
the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"By Allah, I am not afraid that you will become poor, but I am afraid that worldly wealth will be given to you in abundance as it was given to those nations before, and you will start competing with each other for it as the previous nations competed for it, and then will divert you as it diverted them."

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: We said, "O Messenger of Allah, who are the best of people?" He صلى الله عليه وسلم replied: "Everyone who is pure of heart and sincere in speech." When they asked him what is meant by a "pure heart" he said: "It is [the heart] that is pious and pure, with no sin, injustice, rancour or envy in it." 🤍

Imām Ash Shāfi’i was asked: What is the greatest act through which a slave gets closer to Allah?

The Imām (may Allah have mercy on him) cried, and then said: It is for Allah to look at your heart and see that you do not want anything from this world or the hereafter except for Him سبحانه

One of the Salaf stated:

لا تجدُ أحدًا عاقًا لوالديه إلا وجدته جبّارًا شقيا.
‎"You will not find anyone who is undutiful to his parents except that he is an arrogant, wretched person."

ثم قرأ: {وَبَرًّۢا بِوَٰلِدَتِى وَلَمْ يَجْعَلْنِى جَبَّارًا شَقِيًّا}
‎Then he recited: {He made me dutiful to my mother and He didn't make me to be an arrogant, wretched person.}

Sheikh ibn uthaymeen رحمه الله was asked about the causes of the hardness of the heart and he answered:

the causes of the hardness of the heart are many , from amongst them are :

turning away from the rememberance of Allah, that a person doesn't remember Allah much, and you find him not remembering Allah in his heart in the obligatory prayers, he recites, bows, prostrates, glorifies and invokes but his heart is negligent, this is from the ways of hardness.

and also from the causes are :
abundance of jesting ,playing and passing time with the friends and family, and this is why the companions used to say to the prophet

"when we are in your company, we fear and be witness over the Hell-Fire and Paradise but when we we go away and attend to our wives, our children, our business; most of these things (pertaining to After-life) slip out of our minds, to which the prophet replied 'time should be devoted (to the worldly affairs) and time should be devoted (to prayer)'"

and from the causes of hardness of the heart are :
devotion to the world and preferring it over the afterlife and verily they are those men who gather wealth and for it are numerous ways, and for this , it is upon the man when he finds his heart being hardnened , he initiates to treat it before it solidifies and be incapable of being treated.

You'll Die Between Two Good Deeds...

Muʿādh b. Jabal رضي الله عنه advised his son:

يا بني إذا صليت فصلّ صلاة مودّع لا تظن أنك تعود إليها أبداً، واعلم يا بني أن المؤمن يموت بين حسنتين، حسنة قدمها وحسنة أخرها

"My son! Pray the prayer of he who is just about to leave, and realise that you might not be able to pray ever again. And know, my son, that the believer dies between two good deeds; one that he performed, and one that he intended to perform later on."

The True Test Is When You Have The Desire Aswell As The Ability

Ibn al-Jawzī رحمه الله said:

"Do you know what a man is? A true man is he who finds himself alone with sins, and has the power to commit them and his lusts urges him to quench its thirst, but he thinks about Allāh looking at him, so he feels embarrassed from angering Him and thus his desire goes away.

But it seems that you only abandon things that you do not have desire for, or things that are not desirable in the first place, or even things that you are unable to have! This is your habit!"
