No, not all dilute solutions will produce O₂ at the anode and H₂ at the cathode during electrolysis. The products depend on the nature of the electrolyte and the electrode material. Here's a breakdown:

General Rule for Electrolysis of Dilute Aqueous Solutions:

1. At the Cathode (Reduction):

H₂ gas is produced if the metal ion in the solution is less reactive than hydrogen (e.g., Na⁺, K⁺, etc.).

If the metal ion is less reactive than hydrogen (e.g., Cu²⁺, Ag⁺), the metal is deposited instead.

2. At the Anode (Oxidation):

O₂ gas is produced from water if the anion in the solution is not easily oxidized (e.g., SO₄²⁻, NO₃⁻).

If the anion is a halide (Cl⁻, Br⁻, I⁻), the halogen (Cl₂, Br₂, I₂) is typically released.

Examples:

1. Electrolysis of Dilute NaCl (Sodium Chloride):

Anode: O₂ gas is formed (oxidation of water).

Cathode: H₂ gas is formed (reduction of water).

2. Electrolysis of Dilute H₂SO₄ (Sulfuric Acid):

Anode: O₂ gas is formed.

Cathode: H₂ gas is formed.

3. Electrolysis of Concentrated NaCl (Brine):

Anode: Cl₂ gas is formed (oxidation of Cl⁻).

Cathode: H₂ gas is formed.

Key Takeaway:

Only in some dilute solutions with non-oxidizable anions (e.g., SO₄²⁻, NO₃⁻), the products are O₂ at the anode and H₂ at the cathode. If the anions are halides or other oxidizable ions, the products will differ.

“Nak Makwe Alim, bakal Suami Perlu Sentiasa Cukup Agama”

Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar
Sodium, Magnesium, Aluminium, Silicon, Phosphorus, Sulphur, Chlorine, Argon

📍Na, Mg -> Alkaline
📍Al -> Amphoteric
📍Si, P, S, Cl, Ar -> Acidic

Semakin ke kanan;
1. Electronegativity increases (tendency to accept electrons)
2. Number of protons increase (charge in the atom’s nucleus increase)
3. Atomic size decrease (Atomic radius decrease (sbb charge dkt atom’s nucleus kuat, jadi dia tarik shell electron mendekati atom’s nucleus)
4. Metal -> semi-metal -> non-metal
