Do you still believe it’s almost impossible to study abroad for free with a full coverage of living?

We are happy to share Irina’s story of success, our adviser who won a Chevening scholarship recently. We hope this story will definitely motivate you to prepare for studying abroad! 😍

«Before applying for Chevening, I had a certain working experience. I was a researcher in the field of energy economics. But the energy industry is undergoing a fundamental transformation. So, I decided that I need to learn from the best!

That is why in 2018 I applied for an MSc programme at one of the world’s top-10 universities – UCL – to study energy and environmental economics. For me, Chevening was the only option to get a fully-funded scholarship to study there.

And here I am 3 years later holding a degree with distinction and working at one of the leading think tanks on energy in my home country»

🤔Do you think it's impossible to study in the USA if you are not rich or genius? We've collected several myths about U.S. universities that many people are mistaken to believe in.

🇺🇸 You have to be rich to study.

Tuition at American universities is really expensive. Major league colleges (Harvard, Stanford) charge between $55,000 and $80,000 per student annually. But the choice of educational institutions does not consist only of them, there are much less well-known, but equally good quality universities in the United States.
Additional spending is reduced by part-time jobs, loans, and scholarships.
For example, at MIT and Yale, there are scholarships for low-income students. Need-based scholarships are a program where the university pays all tuition costs ($10,000-18,000 per year).

🇺🇸 Only a genius can get into an American university.

Among the gifted, there are also ordinary students studying in the USA. Obviously, it is difficult to get into Harvard but not all schools have such high requirements. At the University of New Mexico, a 1,000 SAT score will be sufficient. For those in doubt, there is a Pathway Program. The preparatory course costs $15,000 and lasts 1-2 semesters. It's an expensive program, but after completing it you will not only raise your English from B1 level but you are also guaranteed to get into a partner university.

🇺🇸 It's almost impossible to get a student visa.

At the moment, study visas are hardly issued due to a bad epidemiological situation. But some countries just need an invitation from the university and the necessary set of documents to provide a student with a visa.
American colleges and universities have specially made international departments for such purposes, whose responsibilities include assistance to foreign students.

🇺🇸 Theft and bullying on U.S. campuses are common cases.

Student welfare in the U.S. is a top priority. Students are constantly briefed on how to deal with a variety of dangerous situations, and every campus has "panic buttons" to call the police. Cooperation with local law enforcement helps combat petty criminals and thieves.

🇺🇸 There will be a lot of partying instead of studying.

Movies and TV shows strongly influence our perception of American education: constant partying, truancy, and extravagant antics getting away with bullies. In fact, university professors understand that students need to relax and take a break from their studies, and university administrators hold special events with certain rules for that. This way of having fun is suitable for everyone who really wants to study, and not to disappear in clubs for days and nights.

Many people mistakenly think that the more time they spend on textbooks, the better the results will be. But recent research suggests something opposite. Much more important is how intensively you study. So the first rule is to study less but with more intensity.

What you shouldn’t do when studying:

study for many hours at a time;
study one subject for a long time and repeat the information many times in a row to memorize it;
reviewing the same material several times before moving on to the next topic;
reading and rereading a text

And here are some effective ways to learn:

✔️Study intermittently;⠀
✔️Use a pomodoro technique (there’re apps for that)
✔️Think up questions on your own;
✔️Change topics;
✔️Make up associations with the material you learn;
✔️Reflect on the material;
✔️Ask someone to test you after revising the material;
