Many people believe that the IELTS Reading section is one of the hardest parts of the exam. But in my opinion, it's not difficult because the passages are impossible—it's difficult because many students don't fully understand how to approach the different question types.
🎯 If your goal is to score 40 out of 40 in your mock tests or in the real IELTS exam, you need to feel confident with every single question type. Each one requires a different strategy, and knowing those strategies can completely transform your score.
When I took the IELTS for the first time, I scored 6.5 in Reading. At first, I thought I simply needed a stronger vocabulary or faster reading skills. However, after reflecting on my mistakes, I realized that my biggest weakness was not knowing how to approach the different question types correctly.
✨ I spent time learning the strategies for each type of question and practiced them consistently. Once I understood how they worked, everything became much clearer. When I retook the exam, I achieved 8.5 in Reading, and I can confidently say that understanding the question types played a huge role in that improvement.
💡 So before you sit your exam, don't make the same mistake I did. Learn the difference between True / False / Not Given, Yes / No / Not Given, Matching Headings, Matching Information, Summary Completion, and all the other common IELTS Reading question types. Knowing what the examiner is really asking is just as important as understanding the passage itself.
Trust me—once you master the question types, you'll approach the Reading section with much more confidence, make fewer mistakes, and move one step closer to the score you're aiming for. Every high score starts with mastering the basics, and question types are definitely one of them.

IELTS Reading FAQ — Everything I Wish I Knew Before My Retake
After improving my IELTS Reading score, I received the same questions over and over again. Instead of replying individually, I decided to put the most common ones in one place.
These answers are based on my personal experience, what worked for me, and the lessons I learned while preparing for my retake. They may not work for everyone, but I hope they'll help you study more effectively.
Here's what I'll cover:
✨ What should I do to achieve a high score in IELTS Reading?
✨ Can you recommend any magazines or articles to read?
✨ Is reading IELTS passages instead of articles effective?
✨ Is taking mock exams every day useful?
✨ How should I work with IELTS Reading questions properly?
✨ Should I read the questions or the passage first?
I hope this FAQ answers some of your questions and helps you avoid the mistakes I made. If you still have any questions after reading it, feel free to leave them in the comments or send me a message. Good luck with your IELTS journey!

IELTS Reading FAQ — Everything I Wish I Knew Before My Retake After improving my IELTS Reading score, I received the same questions over and over again. Instead of replying individually, I decided to put the most common ones in one place. These answers are…
IELTS Reading FAQ
1. What should I do to achieve a high score in IELTS Reading?
A: Your reading comprehension should be strong, and you need a solid vocabulary. You can improve both by reading the magazines and articles recommended below. If your comprehension skills and vocabulary are well-developed, you'll be able to understand passages more easily and answer most of the questions correctly in the Reading section.
2. Can you recommend any magazines or articles to read?
A: I recommend New Scientist and National Geographic since they cover a wide variety of topics and use vocabulary similar to what you may encounter in the IELTS Reading test. If your reading comprehension foundation isn't very strong yet, HOT English Magazine is a great place to start because the articles are more accessible. You can also read ELS: Short but Gold, which offers short yet high-quality passages that are perfect for building your reading skills consistently.
3. Is reading IELTS passages instead of articles effective?
A: No. Personally, I don't think so. While IELTS passages are great for getting familiar with the test format and question types, they aren't enough on their own. Reading articles exposes you to a wider range of vocabulary, writing styles, and topics, which helps improve your overall reading skills and prepares you for unfamiliar passages on the exam.
4. Is taking mock exams every day useful?
A: Absolutely not. Taking a mock test every day won't automatically increase your IELTS Reading score. If your exam is only a few weeks away, doing regular mock tests is fine—as long as you spend enough time analyzing each passage, reviewing your mistakes, and understanding why you got questions wrong. Otherwise, it's more effective to focus on improving your comprehension, vocabulary, and weak areas first. Once you've built those skills, use mock tests to track your progress, not as your main method of studying.
5. How should I work with IELTS Reading questions properly?
A: Before I retook the IELTS, I spent 28 days focusing only on Reading question types. During that time, I practiced every single question type and developed strategies that worked for me. However, I realized that there isn't a strategy that guarantees the correct answer every time based solely on the question type or passage structure. At the end of the day, your comprehension is what matters most. Strategies can save time and guide you, but if you don't fully understand the passage, they won't always work. That's why I recommend building strong reading comprehension first and then learning strategies for each question type.
6. Should I read the questions or the passage first?
A: I'm not an expert, but based on my experience, I'd recommend starting with the questions first. Since we only have 60 minutes to complete three passages, reading every text from beginning to end before looking at the questions isn't the most time-efficient approach. Reading the questions first gives you an idea of what information you're looking for, which can save valuable time. That said, this approach won't work unless your reading comprehension is strong. So, my recommendation is to start with the questions and then locate the relevant parts of the passage.
