श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता अध्याय 2, श्लोक 66

नास्ति बुद्धिरयुक्तस्य न चायुक्तस्य भावना | न चाभावयतः शान्तिरशान्तस्य कुतः सुखम् ||

Hindi meaning: भगवान श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं कि जिसका मन और इंद्रियां वश में नहीं हैं (जो योगयुक्त या संयमित नहीं है), उसकी बुद्धि स्थिर नहीं हो सकती। स्थिर बुद्धि के बिना मनुष्य के मन में परमात्मा या आत्मस्वरूप का चिंतन (भावना) नहीं हो सकता। जिसका मन स्थिर और भावयुक्त नहीं है, उसे शांति नहीं मिल सकती। और जिसे शांति ही प्राप्त नहीं है, उसे सुख कैसे मिल सकता है?

English meaning: "The man whose mind and senses are not under control (ayuktasya) does not have a determined intellect. That uncontrolled man does not even have feeling or contemplation of the Divine in his heart. Without feeling (contemplation) there is no peace, and one who does not have peace, how can he find happiness?"

श्रेयान् स्वधर्मो विगुणः परधर्मात्स्वनुष्ठितात् ।
स्वधर्मे निधनं श्रेयः परधर्मो भयावहः ॥ ३.३५ ॥

Transliteration:
Śreyān sva-dharmo viguṇaḥ para-dharmāt sv-anuṣṭhitāt |
Sva-dharme nidhanaṁ śreyaḥ para-dharmo bhayāvahaḥ ||

Simple meaning-

“It is better to perform one’s own duty, even imperfectly, than to perform another’s duty perfectly. It is better to die while following one’s own dharma; following another’s dharma is fraught with danger.”

What does Krishna actually mean?

The key word is स्वधर्म (svadharma).
It doesn't simply mean “do whatever job you currently have.” It refers to the duties and responsibilities that arise from one's nature, abilities, circumstances and rightful role in life.

And परधर्म (paradharma) means trying to live according to a path that belongs to someone else rather than one's own nature and responsibilities.
So Krishna is essentially saying:
Don't abandon your authentic path merely because someone else's path looks more impressive, easier, or more successful.

Ever wondered why the “Bread & Circuses” idea feels strangely relevant today?
The Roman poet Juvenal used the phrase Panem et Circenses — “bread and circuses” — to describe how people could be kept satisfied and distracted through basic material comforts + entertainment.

📱 The modern “circus” can look like an Reel feed.
You open Instagram for “just 5 minutes” → one reel becomes ten → ten becomes an hour.
The algorithm learns what keeps you watching and continuously serves you short, stimulating, personalised content.
Result constant stimulation that can consume attention.

The bread and circuses concept gives us a lens to ask:

Are we consuming entertainment, or is our attention being consumed by entertainment?

Because in the attention economy, your attention itself has value.
So maybe the modern version isn't simply:
“Keep people fed and entertained.”
It's:
“Keep people comfortable, stimulated, and scrolling.” 📱♾️

Think about it:
If you never get bored, when do you get time to think?
