Bharat Ratna Awards:
- Instituted on 2 January 1954
- any field of human endeavor (2011) (originally limited to achievements in the arts, literature, science, and public services)
- recommendations for the award are made by the Prime Minister to the President
- Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a peepal leaf-shaped medallion with no monetary grant associated with the award
- Bharat Ratna recipients rank seventh in the Indian order of precedence
- first recipients of the Bharat Ratna C. Rajagopalachari, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, C. V. Raman
- The award was briefly suspended twice in its history 1977 and 1992
- The number of annual awards is restricted to a maximum of three in a particular year. This year maximum 5 so far. Total no of Bharatratna awardee reached to 53.
