PRELIMS TEST SERIES FAQs

1. Which institute?
I used to attempt sectional tests of one institute and FLTs of 3-4 and appeared for Free Open Mocks (online) for any institution offering it.

My recommendations - Vision, Forum, Next IAS, Vajiram.

2. How many?
Around 2 sectionals of each subject + 5/6 FLTs + 4/5 Open Mocks.
(The number can vary based on your past experience of the examination.)

3. How to analyse a test?
This video explains it the right way.

4. Coaching institutes questions are nowhere close to UPSC standards, what to do?

They will never be. The objective of appearing for Mocks should be clear - to get into MCQ mode of thinking, formulating a strategy to attempt the paper and to practice how to use existing knowledge to answer questions that you don’t know.

BUT, PYQs still remain the most authentic Mock test and should be attempted first. Last 10 years’ PYQs are non negotiable but should attempt as many as one can. Old themes sometimes appear in the paper with a twist. If you have to choose between one more mock test vs one more year’s PYQs, the choice should be obvious.
